Welcome! From experience, the first couple of weeks of every Bootcamp sees very fast moving chat threads, and so if you have a question, it's easy for it to be missed.

So post anything you want to ask on this thread and I and the other experienced low carbers will try and keep and eye on it and give you our best answers.

I'm in Aus so some products are different. The Mayo we buy is 1.3g carb to per 100g. Is that ok or should I try to switch?

Dumdedumdedum · 11/05/2015 04:45

digger - I'm sorry, I have no idea if it's OK, but just to tell you, my home-made mayonnaise (all olive oil) is about 0.7 gms of carbs per 100gms. HTH.

Oh, look, this is the nutrition info for the Delouis mayo which those in the UK are recommended to use: www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Delouis-Mayonnaise/30779011 (0.6gm carb /100)

Hope this helps you!

Help, please! I can't find an approved vegetable list anywhere on the spread-sheet - I can see the veg carb counter, is that the same thing? The other list of "allowed" vegetables I've found includes things like broad beans, parsnips and potatoes - is that right or am I looking at the wrong thing?

Report
BIWI · 11/05/2015 07:50

digger - that's pretty good for a manufactured mayo.

Dum - potatoes, broad beans and parsnips are certainly not allowed! Where did you find that?

The allowed list is on one of the tabs at the bottom - the carb counter is probably the same thing, is it not? As it does show the carbs in veg?

BIWI - I was hunting round to find an actual list of allowed veg to print out, as opposed to the carb counter on the spreadsheet, and followed this link for low carb foods: www.mumsnet.com/health/diet-and-fitness/low-carb-foods and foolishly understood it to be the low-carb vegetable list you were talking about. In fact, it's obviously just a list of carbs in vegetables. I'm just a confused person, don't mind me.

For some reason the carb counter tab on the spread sheet is showing 16 for bean sprouts. That's not right, is it? It should be 2.5, I think? Don't want to cause confusion by changing it myself.

I'll check that out Dum but the carb counter was made before I came along so not sure.

Can you not just copy and paste the list from the spreadsheet to print off?

I have a question about cooking. Am I allowed to use things like tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce? They are quite carby but I won't be using much. If not, what can I use for flavour?

Report
SayraT · 11/05/2015 08:42

Freias I think it is ok to use those things, I do. As you say you use a small amount in a dish so the overall count isn't too bad.

Why not try working out the carb counts for some of your recipes and seeing what the per portion count is.

Dum I've changed beansprouts Smile

Thanks SaryaT - I've copied and pasted it now, it's just I found that other list when I was reading about low carb bootcamp. Any chance of putting endive (3 gms carbs per 100) into the veg carb counter tab, please?

Is fruit tea / black coffee ok to have as served without milk? Or does it need to be limited too?

Report
SayraT · 11/05/2015 09:06

TheWWord some people find that they need to restrict caffeine but others don't. I can't remember off the top of my head but I think the BC rules say that we should give up caffeine for the first two weeks.

After that it should be ok as long as you don't drink gallons, I'd think that fruit tea is better than coffee but you should still be trying to get your water intake from 'pure' water rather than teas etc.

Dum I'll add that later today.

Thanks Sayra! That's a great idea about adding up carbs, though does rather rely on me following actual recipes rather than just chucking everything in a pot and hoping for the best ?? will give it a go.

Thanks very much, SaryaT, that's very kind of you Grin

Can I just double check that as I'm bf 19wo dd I should be following bc light?

Also how 'coconutty' is coconut oil? i.e. does it give whatever you add it to a taste of coconut, I really don't like coconut but everyone raves about how good the oil is.

Report
SayraT · 11/05/2015 09:39

three I am not an expert but yes, I think that you should be following BC light and I think that some other people who were BFing also occasionally added in some carbier veg if they felt the need.

You could ask this on the main thread if you wanted as we have a few who are BFing and they will be able to give you a better answer than me.

You can get flavourless coconut oil but I can't remember which one it is, I will find out and let you know.

threeickle you can get coconut oil that tastes quite coconutty but Holland and Barrett do one that's flavourless. Coconut flavoured cauli rice is gorgeous though!

Is full fat creme fraiche ok insteam of cream? I can't abide the texture of double cream, it's soapy. Bleurgh.

Report
CrabbyTheCrabster · 11/05/2015 11:08

Klep yes full fat creme fraiche is absolutely fine. Watch out for the half fat stuff though - they stick modified maize starch in it to make up for the lack of 'mouth feel' in removing the fat. Hmm

Excellent, thanks Crabby.

Hi I've lost your low carb moussaka recipe since last camp! Is there a quick way to find it?

Also what is this coconut expensive yoghurt everyone is speaking of??? I need to buy it.

Report
lisbapalea · 11/05/2015 12:13

It's called co-yo and is absolutely amazing but it's about 5 a tub! I got some from Ocado. It's very thick so you probably wouldn't need to eat as much as of normal 'sloppy' yogurt. Someone definitely needs to bring out a lower cost version though!

Is home made flax seed bread OK in bootcamp? I make it with ground flax (linseed), sugar free almond milk and eggs. I've seen sites that state linseed has zero carbs due to fibre carb ratio but wonder what you all think. Will give it up for bootcamp if necessary but generally only have a small slice first thing with butter to get me started for the day as I get up very early.
