Long haul holiday with children under 5

It’s a special birthday for my husband next year and we want to mark it with a nice holiday (budget permitting). We’ve got two children under 5 and are looking to spend about 1500-2000 per person. Anyone have any recommendations of hotels/locations? We have flexibility in terms of travel until September when our daughter starts school. We usually do all inclusive or camping and aren’t well travelled so looking for inspiration!

Which time of year do you want to go? Is your other dc also over 2? How hot do you want it?

We can go any time of year - ideally March/April/May. Don’t mind about heat. Youngest is 1 so they’ll be in the discounted seat territory...

I would choose somewhere with really good kids club. Caribbean is good for this IME and Jan/Feb is a really nice time to go.

Thanks @Thople - any recommendations on hotels or islands?

Take a look at Mauritius, some great resorts, family friendly with good food, kids clubs and beaches. Late April/early May would be a lovely time to visit.

I have just got back from Florida with my LG she's 2, she absolutely loved every second of it and was amazing on the flight but jet lag has been a nightmare since being home xx

March and April might be a bit cheaper for the Caribbean. Your budget is barely enough for a special holiday of more than a week.

I think most islands are good but make sure you do one direct flight. I would also consider the Florida Keys. Or Mexico.

I didn’t go long haul with ours until they were 5. Economy with a baby on my lap just wasn’t going to happen!

Would you consider a cruise? Travelling from Southampton so no flights or jet lag. Free kids club on board too with P&O

With kids 5 and under, all they want is a good beach and warm safe water, but what do you want as the parents ? Caribbean direct flights from the UK and Villa rental would be good ,Antigua, Barbados plenty of cheap self catering accommodation , car hire available , direct flights.
as has been suggested Florida is also a good alternative and I would suggest the Gulf Coast for the calmer water.
Did both of these many times when DC were smaller, jet lag on return can be an issue but just build in suitable recovery time before school. I would steer away from anywhere where the flights are in excess of 10hrs
