Thinking night flights out, what is the best time to fly back? Children will be 10 and nearly 8. Thanks

They don't fly overnight on the way out, so leaving Heathrow at 2 or 3 is best as then you get a bit of sleep on the plane, but get to your hotel late enough to just go straight to bed.
Coming back, BA do a morning flight which does mean you don't miss a night in a bed, but does take up a whole day and it can be hard to get any sleep as they leave at 7/8.30. But the flights are short from NY so the night flights leave you with an awful lot of day to get through when you get home!

Overnight flights only happen on the return journey due to the 5 hour time difference.

Daytime flights to the US are usual; these usually start early morning and continue through till around 4.00 in the afternoon. You probably won't sleep much if at all on the way to NYC.

Early morning flights out cost more because there are usually more business people on these. Most flights back to the UK from NYC leave late afternoon or later say around 9.30 in the evening.

Have a look at carriers like Virgin and BA; both operate numerous flights to either JFK or Newark daily.

We normally try to fly out as early as possible then as late as possible
We have family in Long Island so hanging about waiting for flight never really happens.

There are flights that leave as late as 7-8 pm from Heathrow but arrive in nyc at about midnight, not ideal if you have slept the whole flight out.

We fly on 12 noon flight so DD stayed awake and then slept as normal that night. The night flight return was worse as DD not as happy and didn't really sleep, then we all had to keep each other awake all day.

We are in NY now applecrumble and flew out on Monday morning at 10am so landed at approx 1.30pm local time. We then kept busy until falling into bed about 7pm. Kids woke at about 5am local time which meant we were at the Empire State Building early and so avoided any queues. We managed to all stay awake until about 8.30pm grin

This morning they woke at about 6am and hopefully it will continue to get better each day.
DCs are 13 and 10.

We took dd to NY in Feb.

Flew into JFK as a night flight, no problem.

Returned from EWR and that was a night flight too.

Dd's are 4 and 6.

Try and fly back to the uk late in the evening - the flight back is shorter and landing at 7 am ish (which means they get everyone ready for landing an hour before does make for a very unconfortable day!
