Lone parents

if your dcs are very young do you worry about what would happen if you had an accident?

I am lone parent, ds is just 2. What would happen if I eg fell down the stairs and knocked myself out or if something much worse happened? (lots of sad posts on MN at the moment about friends who have died in their sleep, whilst only being in their thirties for example). I speak to my Mum frequently but not every day. I work part time. My neighbours are out at work all day and often away. Had the most horrible thoughts about ds being in the house with an unresponsive mother and how long it would take for someone to find him. Not weeks but a couple of days if unlucky.

Am I being morbid and worrying unneccessarily or does this bother anyone else? and if so do you do anything about it, like always call a friend or relative on a daily basis?

sorry to introduce such a horrible topic but it has really been worrying me recently.

You're not being morbid. I've had same thoughts as well.

DS is now 5 and he has known how to phone police (999) since he was quite young, but has never tried to do it. I have a little picture with 999 under it stuck on the cupboard by the phone, just in case.

I also have my mums number on speed dial, and it's programmed under the age that he is. So if he presses and holds down 5 it will start ringing my mum. He quite often will call her to say night by doing this, so he remembers. it works well.

At the age of 2, it's a bit harder. But maybe you could try the speed dial thing but with a mates mobile number in it, and then gat him used to calling it?

yes I worry about this too, more so in the early days. when I left exp one of the first thigns I did was make a will. I don't think you should let it prey on your mind. Perhaps you could take a practical step like call your mum regularly - but worrying about things we can't control isn't constructive even if it's irresistible - never used to worry about this when exp was away on business for example, when something could jsut as easily have occured - but as soon as alone was imagining the most dire scenarios

thanks both, I feel better that I'm not the only one who worries. ds loves the phone so will try the speed dial thing - I could put the same number on all of them even - my mum won't mind if she gets accidental calls from ds now and again!
