Why were people giving dirty looks at me and pram

Had not nice looks my way just today, looking at my daughter and me. We went to London for her first visit. DD was quiet, chilled in her pram, dressed pretty, clean an fresh. I dress modestly. I had people looking at me then my daughter in a weird way!

Can't work out if it's a "young single mum thing"?... I know people like to judge... I'm young but look older. I recently broke up with my partner and I notice that other people around me with prams are all with their partners. I met up with my brother there briefly, he was walking behind me at one point and noticed it. Even a group of people in front were looking behind jointly at me and my LO and giving me bad looks!... It felt uncomfortable. This is the only photo I took of us today it's a bit blurry, just can't work it out. Made me feel a bit insecure

I don't imagine anybody on MN could know why or how people were looking at you today, but sorry you felt uncomfortable.

I definitely wouldn't worry about people in London thinking you're too young or too single to have a child. From your photo you look a normal child-having age, and London is a pretty diverse place.

you had a massive bunch of judgemental idiots today. You do look youg but that's no reason for them t be rude. Your DD is so cute btw.

Perhaps you were just around more inquisitive people or were just aware of eye contact in a new place?

Good on you for getting on with life after break up. I haven't braved London with DCs by myself...yet!

The only thing I can think off would be that you were using a pram. Obviously depends where you were in London, but a pram in a busy Oxford St would draw attention as it's big and difficult to dodge around in a crowded st. Anyway how could anyone assume you are a single mum ?Plenty of families have dads working at the weekend.

I think you and your DD look lovely. Please don't worry about a bunch of people who you don't know.

I think if people were looking at you & your baby, it was because your both stunning & beautiful

You know what?

Who cares? Don't give it a second thought!

Maybe everyone in london just looks miserable lol but yes I had a pram in a very busy place. That is a good point! maybe that annoyed people as I was near the London eye an it was pretty busy

Possibly jealousy - or people wondering how can you look so good AND have a baby! Enjoy your little baby. Beautiful pic.

I'm not saying you shouldn't use your pram !
I agree with Winnie and Onynx - you look stunning and happy!

Well, London can be unfriendly can't it? You don't get much nodding and smiling at strangers, in my experience anyway.

Don't give it another thought.

Lovely photo Smile
Oxford St is horrible, people can be very rude when it's extremely busy (lived in London nearly all my life), please don't take it personally. Also, it's nobody business how old you are, pretty sad for them tbh.

My (extensive) experience of travelling in London is that people either ignore you or give you a grumpy look. Generally, that is.

Don't worry about it, they were probably just frowning at something that might hold them up for an extra 5 seconds.

No one was looking at you. At all.

You wouldnt get a second glance on the streets of London. I think you may have imagined it. You were nothing out of the ordinary.

How big is your pram? If you had a coach built Silver Cross in cramped areas then it might have been your pram that was annoying them.

Agree with Queen Liz, it's quite difficult to attract attention in London and a pretty girl with a pretty child isn't a rare sight.

They might just have been doing the London 1,000-yard stare or, if the experience of being there was unusual for you, you might have looked at people yourself and got looks back?

I barely bother looking at anyone any more as there are just too many people to bother about. I look at clothes if they are particularly nice or nasty - saw a guy in a really hideous suit today.

I work on a farm most days and otherwise have a few shops in my vicinity . Pushing the pram through that road, It was like pushing custard up a hill. I for sure got some mean stares but that must have been why, as it was only from people in my path. It wasn't something I thought of before, there was me thinking people were judging! Thanks anyway guys

You're so pretty and your DD is gorgeous. In all honesty I don't mean to be rude at all but you could pass for 14! Take it as a compliment as I said you are very pretty.

Was you hitting ankles? I just find it odd that people in front of you were turning round to look at you.

Report
Glastokitty · 16/10/2016 02:11

Blimey, I honestly think it's just the London thousand yard stare thing. Most Londoners wouldn't bat an eye if you were eight foot tall, naked and dressed like Cleopatra, so I doubt very much you were getting dirty looks unless you were bashing ankles with your pram.

Haha

No.

Are you a sock puppet for the OP.

If it was anything...she was probably dawdling with her buggy and people wished she'd get out the way.

Thinking that people were staring at her and glaring at her a) because she is a single mother, b) young and c) jealous of her looks.....including me.

I have honestly never witnessed such vain glorious self flattery undertaken with a straight face.

And I meant not out of the ordinary in terms of a young single mum...as if they dont exist in London by the thousands? I didnt mean looks.

Imagine if people who lived in London nodded at any stranger they saw, they'd be like nodding dogs.
Also, bear in mind most people in Oxford Street aren't actually Londoners...

I have a really young face (though I'm 25) and often out with the pram on my own, no funny looks. Mostly lots of older ladies wanting to look at my baby and tell me all about how their sons were that small once and are now grown ups over 6ft tall.

Was your jumper on inside out or something? That's when people stare at me!
