Living in Fulham and planes noise

Benlaulau · 25/12/2020 14:28

Hi I am writing as we are considering moving to SW London and in particular Fulham. We are not very familiar with the area but did take walks on a couple of occasions in Fulham and Parsons Green. The last time we visited, a month ago, we noticed lound noises due to planes landing at Heathrow around every 10 minutes. I understand this is not something new. The issue is that my OH is quite sensitive to noise.

I would really appreciate the feedback of other members living there.

From your experience, what are the areas the least impacted by the plane noises in Fulham or in the surrounding areas?

Best regards and happy holidays ! This is my first thread StarDaffodilCake

I'm not from there but if you noticed noise when you visited, then surely you'll notice it if you moved there?

People who aren't noise sensitive might just adapt and say it isn't an issue. Can you visit again a few times at different times of week or day?

Lived there for 5 years - you do get used to it, at least we did mostly, but as you observed, it is constant around there. It's difficult to avoid around that area I'm afraid. It was one of the (minor) reasons we ended up moving out.

Every ten minutes? Ha! Maybe during lockdown, but in normal times it’s every two minutes. In my experience (lived in Kew underneath the north runway landing path and in Sheen underneath the south runway landing path), you don’t get used to it if you’re noise sensitive. The first one of the day (approx 5.45am) would always wake me up.

The runways alternate, though, although the first few of the day land on both, so you do get a respite. www.heathrow.com/company/local-community/noise/operations/runway-alternation

A friend moved from Fulham to East Sheen.....she never said noise in Fulham was awful....you get used to it and eventually dont notice it that much...East sheen however was pretty bad....difficult to sit out in the garden !

@earsup if you sit in the garden in East Sheen when the south runway is in use, you have to stop talking every couple of minutes because you can’t hear each other!

They come over at around 2000ft in East Sheen - not sure about Fulham. If I were you, @Benlaulau, I’d spend a day or two sitting in the areas you’re considering, to get a feel for the noise levels. I’d never want to do it again, that’s for sure, but it really depends on the person - some people aren’t that bothered.

Thank you for your advice! We will visit Fulham again on different days and times to see have a better feel of the noise level. We will also visit Clapham hoping it's less impacted as it is more to the east.

I guess flight tracker is no use at present unless you can see the traffic for previous normal months etc....I lived in Battersea for a short while...never noticed plane noise, in fact it was a lot worse in Camberwell as lived there for a year or so...

We live in Battersea just on the other side of the river (also next to the Heliport). We have got used to it, but for someone very sensitive to noise I'd be a bit wary.

We are in Clapham and don't really notice any plane noise at all!

It's worth bearing in mind that under "normal" circumstances, Heathrow have a landing and a take off approximately every 90 seconds or so rather than every 10 minutes. Plans are also moving forward for a 3rd runway again - I'm not familiar with the areas you've mentioned, but it may be worth investigating whether this would increase the impact further.

My cousin lives in east sheen and she has triple glazed noise proof windows in her bedroom. She's a v light sleeper. Only problem is in the summer as you can't then open the window for ventilation.

Wind direction makes a big difference to noise. So if wind was coming from direction of the airport it would seem louder, if some other direction then it could be louder still at other times.

We lived there for a few years, didnt bother me so much as I'm an early riser but really bothered DH. For a few days in a row we would get woken up at 5am then it would switch and we would get the noise until midnight. We couldn't really enjoy the communal gardens at our flat to their fullest as it wasnt great when the planes were overhead. They were very low. We moved to Wimbledon which was much better but I always missed being able to walk to Kensington on a weekend!

Can’t comment on Fulham but we looked at moving to part of west London that is fairly affected now and due to be much more so once the third runway is there. Have a look at HACAN which has maps of forecast flight paths etc.

If it bothers you now, I’d say it’s only going to get worse unfortunately.

I'm not sure a re-visit to check the noise will really give you a real impression - as several of pp have said upthread one aircraft every ten minutes is abnormally low because of the current circumstances. Normally you'd expect it to be closer to one every 2 minutes or less for a lot of the day.

If the Wind from the west ( and that is most days of the year) noise is going to be the issue for Fulham because inbound aircraft will overfly West London on the way in. The track the aircraft take is aligned quite tightly in use with the runway at that point and that means that to some extent exactly where you live, north of south of that track is quite critical to the noise level you'll experience (have a look on Flight radar). That noise level will also change slightly at 1500 hrs as the airport changes the runway in use at that time ( as explained on HACAN and the other sites)..

Other happy news Confused for anybody sensitive to noise is that the airport opens up for jet traffic at 0430 Local time..and pre-Covid the inbound rush started immediately the clock ticked over because lots of Long_haul flights were timed to land just after that curfew ended..

Good news (there is some) is that if the Wind is from the east flights depart LHR and head off in directions that should avoid Fulham..

They come over at around 2000ft in East Sheen - not sure about Fulham.

Should be about 3000 feet, and also overflying with the engine power back at almost "idle"..OTOH being closer to the airport East Sheen is at about the point when, landing to the west, aircraft's landing flap is being run out and the gear is going down, with engine power starting to go back up to compensate for the drag. As a result you'd expect the noise levels there to be higher than in Fulham.

Imo the plane noise is not noticeable at all but maybe I'm desensitized to it? I don't really notice road noise either, I would say Fulham is fine. I do notice plane noise in kew and whiton

Yes it is awful. I never got used to it living in Putney. It really is not a place to live if you are at all sensitive to noise.

Thank you all for this. It is really helpful. Every 2 minutes sounds horrible. I am surprised that property prices are so expensive in those areas despite the noise pollution Smile

Agree....East Sheen is shockingly expensive....not sure why...my friend sold up and is now in Hampshire.

I lived in Fulham for a year when I was a student and was not bothered by flights at all. I do remember visiting a friend in Whiton and was amazed by how noisy it was.

I wrote on your other thread.

Friends had a lovely big house nearby by the white horse pub / Parsons Green.

We stayed one weekend in their basement flat and we could not sleep.

It made us buy in a quiet street.

I would def suggest that don’t waste your money for what people say.
Aeroplanes won’t let you sleep and neighbours are mostly council tenants that they believe they have received a magic to have a place under these noise.

it used to be fine but it’s def is not what they described. It’s not even posh, every thing is too old, floor is moving when u walk and they need to be repaired. Price is horrendous and unbelievable.strange people are living in the area without any self respect .

People leave their dog shit in the pavement and don’t even bother to pick it up.
Chelsea is the same, I had a nice apartment there but the noise of the street was like living in the highway. It is just their name, which is posh and amazing but same as anything else in life ,it’s just a name and definitely not good for healthy living style.

if you are good with noise, you can consider it but I wouldn’t..
I soon move back to Brighton ,where I used to live.
good luck
