Are there any completely no go areas in London? And why?

Are these violent or extremely dangerous areas, full of gangs or what?

Errrrr no. Well apart from Oxford Street in the pre Christmas rush...

Where are you from op??

Of course there aren't!

Personally? The Angus Steakhouse on Piccadilly.

Seriously? Absolutely not. Many areas are not without their issues but are perfectly safe as long as you are not going there to engage in something illegal yourself.

YY to all Angus Steakhouses. How on earth are they still open? Nobody ever eats there!

Bank station at rush hour is pretty grim.

I walked past one on saturday and the queue for it was 20m long. The mind boggles.

I would avoid Primark on Oxford St all year around but other than that I think we're all good.

There may be some areas that I would feel worried about walking around at 3am by myself but, generally, no.

Leicester Square. Full of tourists. Awful.

Most cities have no go areas, surely? Areas that you wouldn't want to be alone in after dark, or wouldn't want your kids visiting?

I'm in a small, posh city and there are quite a few areas I wouldn't go to.

I'd avoid the East London Boroughs at night. Lots of moped crime and muggings - even in the leafier parts.
I think it's the same for some other boroughs.
Central London is probably fine.

depends who you are. My no-go areas might not be the same as someone else's.

Report
MorrisZapp · 27/11/2018 12:02

Broadly, we'd all avoid high crime areas, wouldn't we?

Report
peachypetite · 27/11/2018 12:03

There are dodgy parts of course but isn't that the same wherever you go?!

weebarra · 27/11/2018 12:03

Morris - I may be in the same small posh city as you. There are definitely areas I wouldn't go to at night (especially fireworks night) but ha e to visit during the day as part of my job and they're ok.

I live in East London and have never had a problem.

Woman I know lives in Barnes, got mugged outside her 3 million quid house.

Who’s to say?

There's no area in the U.K. I wouldn't visit, but there's places I would be more aware of my safety than others. Where we live (small city) my teen DD's go out alone routinely at night. London has opportunist crime like many places, but no no go areas

Weetabixandshreddies · 27/11/2018 12:08

I lived in London for years. There's no area I wouldn't go into.
OP: You'll find most of London is a weird mix of poverty and wealth with people from vastly different walks of life living cheek by jowl. I don't think the middle classes have the luxury of avoiding any of the areas! Grin

Lol at all the packed tourist answers. I bet all of you have areas you wouldn't like your kids going to. That's what's really being asked, not where are the relaxing bits.

Report
RiverTam · 27/11/2018 12:22

yes, I am a Londoner born and bred and I don't think I would ever say 'there's nowhere I wouldn't go'.
