Do you have a son or daughter who is a dab hand at writing poetry?

Warwickshire’s Library Service launched the county’s first Young Poet Laureate competition on 2nd October and there is still time for your child to enter.

The competition is open to any budding poets between the ages of 13 – 17 who write poetry and would love to read it to an audience. They should also be prepared to develop their poetry writing skills and promote poetry to people across the county.

The position of Warwickshire’s Young Poet Laureate is unique and the person will get a chance to develop their writing and take part in local events. The post is for a year and the Young Poet Laureate will be selected in January.

The person who is selected will receive a certificate and £100 worth of poetry books, kindly supplied by Askews and Holts Library Services Ltd.

How to apply

Applicants need to:

• be 13-17 years old
• live or attend school or college in Warwickshire
• submit four poems (one of which should be on the theme of Warwickshire and
one on the 2014 National Poetry Day Theme of Remembrance)
• submit a personal statement and explain in 250 words:
o Why you want to be Warwickshire’s first Young Poet Laureate
o How you would promote poetry to the diverse range of people in the county

The Young Poet Laureate will get a chance to work closely with Warwickshire Libraries and other organisations.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to perform in front of judges and an audience and will be judged on their poems, personal statement and performance.

A selection of all poems sent in will be displayed on the Warwickshire Libraries website.

The closing date is 5pm, Monday 17th November.

You can download the application form from or visit your local Warwickshire library to ask for a form.
