...and not sure where! have been thinking about west oxfordshire but is it noisy because of brize norton?
we were looking around dicot (one of us will be commuting to london one to oxford) but think it may be too expensive for what we want - rural, three beds, somewhere up to £375k, near a good primary. would like to be in a village big enough with stuff to do like mother and baby groups but not a town.
so looks like it might be a longer commute to london. is anyone out near glos borders or around burford?
thanks for your patience....

Hi there,

we're under the Brize flight path and tbh, it's rare that the flights are out of work hours (they have been recently because a lot of troops are coming home).

I actually used to live in Didcot, it's an utter hole. The best thing about it is how easy it is to escape. The primary's there aren;t up to much either. There are loads of lovely villages near Didcot though (Sutton Courtenay, Chilton, Harwell, Blewbury, all within reasonable commute to the station), but none of them really have much more than a pub and a local shop.

Sounds like somewhere like Long Hanborough would be OK for you, which is excellent for commuting to Oxford AND London or anywhere further up that train line.

Burford is lovely, but you would end up driving to Hanborough to get the train anyway and the A40 is an awful road. personally I would go for the villages north of the A40. Eynsham is also very nice.

eynsham

Drayton

kingston bagpuize

Clifton Hampden is lovely but pricey

do not discount eg Witney or ABingdon - yes they are towns but then you get shops/doctors/library within pramming distance.

You might want to think about commuting on the Chilterns Line into Marylebone, rather than from Didcot. I did the Didcot-Paddington commute for eight years and found the service very frustrating. The Hanborough or Charlbury service to Paddington is also unreliable. The Chilterns service is much more reliable. If you did do this, you could look at places between Thame or Bicester and Oxford for living. Islip, Horton-cum-Studley, Stanton St John and environs are all pretty. There is more going on in Islip, I imagine.

If you have to commute into Paddington, then I wouldn't dismiss Abingdon. It's a town, but quite small and there's a lot going on in the community.

The Oxford commuter in your family would be well advised to avoid living anywhere that involved commuting along the A40, which is notoriously clogged up during the rush hour. We ruled out Eynsham for that reason (though I agree it's a lovely place).
