Good areas in Newcastle

Hiya, as I've said, me and my little family are moving to Newcastle sometime between now and September (basically as soon as we can get someone to take over the lease on our house) and I was wondering which areas people would recommend to live in. We'll be renting and have a budget of around £600 pcm, we need to be near the metro as I'll be going to one of the unis, and it can't be too rough as we have a 2 year old, plus I'm a wimp!

Best places are gosforth and jesmond but they are expensive!

Avoid places like Benwell!

Happy to give you some advice if you have any areas in mind though!

600pcm won't get you somewhere in Gosforth or Jesmond, which are the very posh areas.
Do you want a flat or a house?
West of the city is cheaper, and some nice parts of Fenham which could be affordable. No metro to the west though but decent buses.
Walkerdene could be affordable for you. Heaton/high heaton both decent areas (heaton more flats and studenty)

Or have you thought about just outside the city but still on the metro - Wallsend for example?
I'd avoid bensham, but low fell (gateshead) is quite nice. Gorgeous park there for toddler.

Wallsend is where I am! Its quite rough though in some bits - depends how big a wimp you are!

I'm in Heaton and it's nice. Lots of students though although again that depends which part of Heaton!

Cochrane Park is nice or Walkergate/Walkerdene. Also I wouldn't class Wallsend as rough, except perhaps Battle Hill?

You need to steer clear of the Westend if you can.

If you can let us know where you've been looking, we can tell you what its like

Agree some bits of Wallsend better than others! I'm thinking of near the green/south of the coast road.

Just wanted to add my bit here....I live in Chester le Street which is half way between Newcastle & Durham. It is much cheaper than Newcastle, has a great park for taking the kids too, loads of pre school groups and toddler groups. There is also a train station so you can catch the train to Newcastle Central Station, takes about 10-15 mins. There are also regular buses which would be about 30 mins depending on traffic, or if you have a car you could be in city centre in 20 mins. I also think Low Fell, is very nice, no metro, no train station, but regular buses into Newcastle, from memory it would take about 15 mins in rush hour. It's pretty much the same as anywhere really, there are good parts and bad parts, but mostly it's a great place to live. I know people who live in Longbenton, there is a metro at Four Lane Ends which will get you into Newcastle. But tbh, I think you might be better off looking further out of Newcastle to get better value for your money. I would be happy to help with any areas you have in mind.

There's no need at all the avoid the West end! Try Fenham around Nuns Moor and the Town Moor: excellent schools, close to the city, lots of families, community atmosphere, thriving churches (if that's your thing)and very few students. Another bonus is that you don't get people vomiting in your garden on their way back from the many bars and pubs in the way you do in Jesmond or the coast.

I am currently in the same situation as Lissyglitter. I am moving to Newcastle by January and looking for a family friendly area (but also close to local amenities/transportation links). I will be working at the Newcastle University. I am also trying to find a nursery nearby. My son is 32 months old. Any advice please?

Gluestick - aim to be fairly close to Newcastle city centre as a general rule of thumb - for us it's a massive bonus to be within striking distance of all the city centre amenities.

All of the tyne and wear area is well served by public transport, especially if you live near a Metro station. Services for children are, on the whole, excellent. Cynics say this is because we are 'Labour Party client state' up here

There are some bits you would want to avoid; Newbiggin Hall, Benwell, Westerhope, Bensham etc.

Try looking around Spital Tongues. Very handy for the Uni and town.

Otherwise Gosforth is nice but a bit pricey.

Is Heaton all nice? Where should I avoid? How about Hotspur road? I found a nursery (Heaton Nursery)and wondering whether we should move there. Most good nurseries do not have places available.

There is a lovely nursery on Chillingham Road (St Gabriels). My DD went there from 18months until she went into reception at school. Not sure what Heaton Nursery is like, I chose St Gabriels because of friends recommendations.

Hotspur street is ok, close to the metro, on a very good bus route into town (the No. 1 bus!) and close to the park!

What about Kenton or Kingston Park? Nothing wrong with those either? Kenton is near to the Gosforth three tier schools, and there is a lovely school in Kingston Par as well. Loads of transport links to the town centre.

Avoid Fawdon though. Other areas to consider is Coxlodge and Red House Farm

Hi all!
I'm also due to be moving to Blyth area (within 20 mile radius ideally) & have no idea what the different areas are like - have a 2yr old, so good nursery's / schools are essential, but ideally not too close to city centre, as I'm hoping to keep horses again one day
Any advice gratefully received xxxxx

I live in Benwell too and its not that bad! It has a very underserved reputation. Ok, its not posh but its cheap, good bus links, good local shops and all my neighbours are very friendly. There's a chav element but I've never witnessed any trouble.

I moved to Gosforth from Fenham about a year ago and I absolutely love living here. I even prefer it to Jesmond, because here are more services (shops, schools etc), it is a bit cheaper and it hasn't got as many rowdy students as in Jesmond. Also, as I work closer to coast, I have noticed that it is always so much colder there, so that's why I also prefer Gosforth over Tynemouth or Monkseaton, for example. Of course there are some nice streets/areas somewhere else too, but I have noticed that the services are not there/transport is a nightmare etc. The worst thing is that they build new estates of expensive family homes and don't even bother with children's play areas...If Gosforth is too expensive, I would recommend Heaton.

onkseaton, Whitley Bay, North Shields, Wallsend? Tynemouth very nice but over your budget but those places are close to the mouth of the Tyne. The sea! The seaside.
