Hi

We are moving to Exmouth next year (new development , house will not be ready until spring 2022)

We know the area reasonably well, have visited east Devon many of times.

Eldest will be moving into year 6 and youngest into year 2 when we move .. no issues with youngest really - looking at st Joseph’s (they are currently in a faith school) or Marpool.

More concerned about the eldest - high achiever in our local primary which is rated outstanding and has great SATS results, ideally want her to take 11+ so it’s TGGS or Colyton - just worried about transport to these schools directly from exmouth - does anyone locally know if they run private busses/ coaches to these schools. Ideally TGGS as I think it’s more realistic that that’s where she would get into.

I’f not do any local children get into Sidmouth college / Kings?

Thanks so much

Hi there,

We are looking to move to the Exeter area, and have been looking at Colyton Grammar as a possible 6th form for our daughter. Does anyone know the school well? Can you give me any insight into whether it's a great school, and good 6th form? I can see that it does really well results wise, but it would be good to hear if it has great staff and a nice atmosphere for 6th formers etc. It may be tricky for me to get to the Open Evening, so would appreciate any insider advice - thank you :)

We’ve had one go through sixth form recently and one who has chosen to go elsewhere at sixth form. So very anecdotally, I’d say the sixth form retains the really controlled environment of Lower school, little autonomy or joy. Some good teaching but patchy. Big emphasis on stem subjects to frustration of other teachers.

Did your DC go to Colyton in the end? My DD has just been offered a place for Yr 7 next year, or what ever the wording is. It was a last minute decision as to sit the 11plus, we are on the fence as to what to do.

I have two at CGS, year 12 and year 10. I also have one at another secondary school and obviously experience of going through primary. Colyton has been the best school imo. Pastoral care has been excellent (and very much needed for one child), better than the other schools I've been though. Also communication is very good, they always reply promptly to emails, less so they other schools. Lockdown teaching was great and they gave every child a laptop to facilitate this (laptops were in the pipeline anyway, pre covid). Also, I don't recognise the description of arts education, I've found it good. Look up the Colyton Big Art show.
