Moving to Ulverston

Hi all, I'm considering a move to Ulverston (or surrounding area) to work in the local high school and would be bringing my daughter who is 8, who would need to attend a local primary. How is the town for racism (my daughter is mixed race)? I have most recently lived in Leeds and Harrogate, so this would be a big change for us, but I like the idea of being much closer to rural areas. Does anyone have direct experience of what the high school is like? And local Primary?

Any info gratefully received!

Hi @Meamoo my dp is from Barrow in Furness (neighbouring town) and we also live in Leeds! That is useless info I know....
I have only visited Ulverston a couple of times so can’t comment but I will ask dp when he gets home.
Such a shame you have to ask these questions ☹️

Do your research on local facilities etc. People rom up that way will often complain that it takes "ages to get anywhere". In fact only the other week i met a lovely lady who had lived near Barrow for many years and eventually grew to hate it. She moved to Stockport but it took her two whole years to find a buyer for her house.

It’s quite an artsy town and in non covid times has a lot of community festivals. Your nearest bigger town is Barrow or Kendal. In terms of racism, Cumbria was the whitest county by the last census data, there is racism in Barrow, less so in Kendal and thankfully it is improving but still work to be done.

There is some lovely beaches at ulverston and if being outdoors is your thing Cumbria is amazing. I agree with pp having to ask about racism is such a shame.

*Digestive28" on the subject of alleged racism in the western lakes, im not sure its racism so much as xenophobia, they are suspicious of incomers. I know people in workington and area and a chinese chippy tried to open but shut down as no one would go in it.

Word soon got round that there might be a mosque in whitehaven and it was the talk of the local newspaper.

Theres an alleged sexual abuse scandal centred on Barrow at the moment and featuring "Asian" men.

@Digestive28 thank you, this is very helpful information - we love being outdoors.
@Arnoldthecat - that is exactly the kind of thing I am fearful of and why it is such an important question to know the answer to for Ulverston. 'Othering' by any means is extremely distressing, especially to children.

Just to update - I have discovered the job location is Dalton in Furness - does this change any comments above? Anything to add? Much appreciated

Dalton is closer to Barrow, almost a suburb of it so maybe start looking up Barrow as it’s quite different to Ulverston

As someone who visits Barrow occasionally in the course of my work, i find it a pleasant change for the day and the coastal feel is quite nice on a fine day. Of course thats very different to living there and it is miles from anywhere
