Moving to Lincolnshire need area advice

Hi, I am really hoping you can all help me with some area information, there are so many mixed messages when researching on google.

We are moving from Kent to Lincolnshire, we would like a respectable, pretty village location, semi-rural, we do not need to worry about commuting or schools, but would like to be within easy reach of a town up to 20 minutes by car would be fine. We want to be near the wolds, for walks and scenery, we are considering all of Lincolnshire and north Norfolk.
So far from research and street view, we like the sound of Horncastle, Alford, Louth, Tealby.
We are very concerned about moving into a rough or deprived area by accident.

Horncastle sounds really nice, Alford looks good but not much written about it, it’s also very close to Mablethorpe, St Leonard’s and Skegness which all have very bad reviews and seem to be deprived, run down and higher crime and drugs problems.
Louth maybe a bit to big, but outskirts would be good, we looked at Thoresthorpe.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.
Kelly.

Sorry I meant Grainsthorpe not Thoresthorpe in the last bit of my post.

I’ve lived in Lincolnshire a while, and spent a couple of years commuting between my job in North Norfolk and my house near Lincoln. There are a lot of nice places! Have a look at Woodhall Spa, Heckington and Holbeach

Stamford.

Hi, thank you.
Caistor, I’ve heard of, but I do not know anything about it, it seems very close to Grimsby, which I have read has high child poverty and rough areas, also Immingham which I have read is a port town, which is not very pretty and has high crime rate for Lincolnshire, is Caistor close enough to be concerned?

Woodhall Spa keeps coming up, I will be having a good look in that area. Never heard of Heckington, is it nice?
Holbeach, seems like a much older community, I was looking at Long Sutton which isn’t to far from there.

Stamford is another name that keeps coming up as lovely, can anyone give any ideas of good roads or roads to avoid?

I live in Lincolnshire. Most of the places you’re talking about are probably a bit more remote than you’d like from the description you’ve made. Horncastle is good 30 minutes to Lincoln on a good day!

Have a look at the villages North of Lincoln, lots of really lovely places, easy access to Lincoln. It takes about 15 minutes to drive in, good bus services from most of the villages.
Several nice pubs, medical practices..have a look at Welton, Nettleham, Sudbrooke (although no pubs there), Dunholme, Scothern. Nettleham is particularly nice with a beck running through it. Stamford is probably a good shout too, very pretty.

I grew up in Woodhall Spa, its a lovely lovely place to live but you will pay over the odds just because its in Woodhall. Horncastle is literally 10 mins from Woodhall. Louth is nice, Stamford is nice, Depends if you want to be close to Lincoln City or a village or a town etc.

Woodhall Spa is beautiful. Like going back in time! It has a lido, lovely park, a proper old fashioned cinema. It’s about 40 minutes drive from Lincoln but you can get to Sleaford quite easily.

Do you have any other requirements? A lot of the places you've mentioned are a bit restrictive if you ever want to travel somewhere. Caistor and that area down to Market Rasen ish and north of Lincoln are better connected.

FreemanHaines · 17/05/2020 20:58

When you google best Lincolnshire villages, Market Rasen is at the top with Tealby and Walesby but on other threads on mumsnet people have really warned against Market Rasen, so I’m trying to see which places repeatedly get the thumbs up.

Lots of great replies, thank you 😊
As for other requirements we think 40-50 minutes to get to Lincoln would be fine, as long as there is a good market town within 20 minutes for all the lesser needs.
We would like that rural feel but also a community feel to the area.
We do not want to feel too remote, we originally looked at Olde Leake but that seemed far to remote. Horncastle, Woodhall and Stamford are coming up a lot.
We have seen a lovely house in Alford, any thoughts on Alford?

Thoughts on Alford - it's a long way from anywhere but Skegness! I don't know Alford itself, but would say that general area is fairly deprived. West of the wolds is a better bet generally

I live on the Isle of Axholme North Lincolnshire. The town I live in is one of the bigger places on the Isle but I like it as it has everything but also still has a nice community feel to it. Some of the smaller places were too rural for me! We are about 20 minutes from Scunthorpe and a little but longer from both Gainsborough and Doncaster.

Thank you, illegalfred, that is very helpful, Alford very rarely gets a mention, so it is very hard to gage what it might be like, but it looks nice.

Alford is a lovely place.

But there is very little there, and with the best will in the world it is 30 minutes from anywhere.

Going up the opposite end of the wolds to Alford we have seen properties we like in Grainsthorpe

On our saved property list we have, as well as the ones already mentioned: we have, Donington On Bain, Tattersall, Binbrook, Yarburgh, Grainthorpe, any guidance on any of those places?

ItsMutinyontheBunty Thank you, I will look at all of them places, I have a property in mind that is for sale in Nettleham.

NooneElseIsSingingMySong Love the sound of the going back in time feel, I can always jump in the car when I’m in a more modern mood.

MummyNWife, village mostly, but 20 minutes max to a town if the village doesn’t have much, up to 50 minutes max from Lincoln.

We would like a relaxed, friendly, quiet spot, plenty of walks for the dogs, but maybe a short walk to a shop, restaurant/pub, post office.

I'm from Lincs, no longer live there. Can I ask OP why you've settled on Lincs? Just curious.

Report
IdblowJonSnow · 17/05/2020 21:48

I wouldn't move to Market Rasen by the way. Stamford would be a better shout and much more connected to the rest of the world - but you may not want that!

Hi IdblowJonSnow, I used to live in Somersham Norfolk as a child before we moved to Kent, I want to get back to the countryside as Kent is becoming more and more built up, Norfolk is lovely but there seems to be bigger open spaces in Lincolnshire and we would like a house with 0.25 acre minimum and there seems to be more property choices in Lincolnshire for houses with land.

I second what has been said upthread about Nettleham, Welton, Sudbrooke and Woodhall Spa. Have you looked at Cherry Willingham/Reepham/ Fiskerton area? Thats where I am and it's a nice distance to Lincoln but just far out enough. Also look at Waddington, Saxilby maybe? Oh and a bit further out but my 'ideal' village is Navenby!

Report
Sunbird24 · 17/05/2020 22:20

Navenby is lovely, but quite expensive (Amazing butchers though!) I’d probably look at Coleby, nice pub and walkable to shops at Waddington, or maybe Metheringham/Ruskington?
Heckington has a working windmill, I was looking at houses there to move to before my ex left
