We are about to agree a contract with Surrey Lofts and I would like some independent reviews. Any advice if anyone has used them? Or if anyone has any other contractors they can recommend who can manage the project from beginning to end.

Hello, I just came across your post and wanted to see how your loft conversion went with Surrey Lofts? Did you experience any problems? who would you recommend? Thank you in advance.

Hi Howes! We're having terrible trouble with SL. What were the issues you had?

Hi daddykelly. Everything they were awful. Planning permission we had to sort. They constructed one of the rooms half a meter too small. They charged us an extra pounds to install a shower despite it being on plans. We went away for two weeks and came home to a bomb site. None of our furniture was covered. House was destroyed we had to koved out a further two weeks. They whole process was awful and the project manager was useless and pointless. Would not ever use them again nor recommend them. I keep meaning to review them. Mark hasnt replied to my complaints. Hope you get it resolved. The whole thing was poorly managed and stressful. Good luck.

We've had an awful experience with Surrey Lofts and Mark Grimshaw! Stay away from this company!

They did a terrible job on our loft extension, then when we were on holiday their plumber flooded our downstairs and destroyed our back room. They're now denying any liability and we may have to take them to court, as the damage is extensive. One of the worst things was they actually stole money from our child's charity jar (yes we have evidence).

The process was terrible, the project manager useless, zero communication after the first week, he never answered his phone, constantly lied to us and the office, he didn't know what was needed or what to do. He didn't even know there was supposed to be an electrical certificate supplied before building control signed off. We constantly had to take in materials because they never showed up, they took the key to our garage and stole items out of it, as well as stole from our house. It all culminated in the job failing building control due to their incompetence.

We've now had to pay external tradesmen to come in and finish in order to bring the work up to a suitable finish for decorating, as the quality of the work was so shockingly bad.

They started in June, it's now end of October and we're still waiting for them to repair the damage they caused.

We've now had them referred to Trading Standards and been advised by Citizens Advice that they're violating the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and to take them to court if they don't put things right.

Here's the lowlights of all the things they did: surreyloftsreviews.com/surrey-lofts-review-list-of-problems-we-had/

After posting my earlier review of Surrey Lofts, the owner called threatening us and threatening me personally. He said leaving a bad review invalidates our guarantee, which is completely untrue and that he would ruin my career. I hope no one else will bow to this blatant bullying.

Hi Guys

Wow im really shocked to hear this after the conversion we recently had with Surrey lofts. we had a fantastic experience and couldn’t fault surrey lofts at all. They were brilliant with us from start to finish, great communication, friendly guys on site and never a moan or grumble even when they were getting soaked through in the rain.We were given a time period of 8-10 weeks but they finished our loft conversion all within 7 weeks.
I could not recommend Surrey Lofts more highly and I’m sorry to hear you have had a bad experience with them.

Both my aunt and my friend both highly recommended them after they carried out conversions. Who was your contracts manager? We had Peter as our Contracts manager and my aunt and friend both had Leigh.

Our project manager was Andy Wayte and he was absolutely terrible. So were all of his guys. They were all awful, but the worst experience came from Mark Grimshaw, the owner. He's the one who called us threatening us if we didn't take the review down. They have only good reviews up online, and now I know why - he calls threatening people if they post a bad review. Perhaps the work depends on who your project manager is, but I would never recommend them to anyone, simply because of Mark and his threatening phone calls.

Vicki was our in-house project manager. She was nice enough, but still very ineffective. Our on-site project manager was originally Marius, but he didn't show up for 3 weeks and it turned out he'd stolen from the company and fled the country (why Surrey Lofts told us this is beyond me!). After that we had Andy Wayte, who was the worst one of all.

I'm so sorry to hear that 2boysl! I posted my review on Google, but looks like it's not show up for some reason now. Grrr. I'd suggest posting a review on Google and contact Trading Standards.

They still haven't fixed our downstairs after they caused massive water damage, and looks like we'll have to go to court to get any resolution. This is going back to summer. :(

I've created a website reviewing Surrey Lofts if anybody wants to post their own website or have a look. Any hits will make it rank higher, as will time spent on the website. And you can leave your own review also (top right 'Leave Your Surrey Lofts Review)! I want to make sure people find out the truth about what they're doing to people.

So we did end up selecting Surrey Lofts to do our extension and also had a bad experience with them (especially with Mark). Leigh was our PM and cut so many corners! We experienced a lot of problems with them too Sad

Mark Grimshaw! is very smooth operator and their office is very polished when they bid for your Contract for loft conversion. Please keep in mind when you pick a company like this, you hope if there are any problems they will honour their warranty.

In my experience, Surrey Loft does a real poor job of honouring their warranty. You have to chase them repeatedly and if you are lucky someone will show up.

Now stepping back in time, when we did our loft conversion the job was divided into 1st fix and 2nd fix. Their first fix guys were fantastic. Second fix where terrible.

In our case we got an independent Gas Engineer to do the heating work. Surrey Loft guys were extremely difficult and extremely un cooperative when having to work with them.

They did things incorrectly and had to be repeatedly asked to do things correctly. Finishing was just awful and in general they left a lot to be desired for.

I would never recommend them to anyone or never use them again.

@SingaporeSling01 - really sorry you're having issues with Surrey Lofts. I posted above a few years ago about our troubles (see above) and unfortunately they are still ongoing. Mark is blocking the insurance from effectively investigating and it's dragged on for years now. We're contacting the financial ombudsman now, but are also looking into going to court.

I am currently in a major dispute with Mark Grimshaw of Hersham/Walton on Thames/Field Common Lane.
It has been stated before in other reviews, he is a ‘smooth operator’ the ultimate salesman who convinced me he could cope and deal with my building project.
The reality is very different and after 11 months of him having men at my house and me having given him vast amounts of money, I been left with a property open to the elements and a myriad of work half finished.
Having now had the work inspected, reported on and documented it is clear the man was totally out of depth on my project and not the ‘big builder’ he has been portraying himself to be.
He has a slick Modus Operandi, and as has been stated before appears to continuously manipulate the truth and lie.
He was paid £10,000 (which is the fraction of the money he was given overall) to employ an architect, but never finalised any drawings before starting building.
He was paid to employ a Structural Engineer, but despite completing some quite complex work, has failed to produce any Structural Drawings.
He was paid to employ a Building Inspector who appears to of signed off work when it has not been completed correctly.

I paid money up front for work that has been completed, but now been deemed incorrect/dangerous and had to be demolished and is now being re-built by a proper builder.
Yes, I should of read all the reviews on Mr Grimshaw and his various companies that I have now seen.
Yes, I should of ‘fact checked’ 100% of everything that came out of this mans mouth.
In my opinion, he is plain a clearly not a successful businessman and proficient builder.
I have only ever known him as ‘Mark from Surrey Lofts’, I did not know what Ltd company was behind Mark from Surrey Lofts – he asked me to pay some money to Surrey Developments Walton Ltd and other monies to him and his son personally.

He produced plans for me with ‘Surrey Lofts’ on the bottom and he had ‘Surrey Lofts’ vans trucks delivering materials to my house that had been taken from other building sites and his warehouse.
He met with me in his ‘Surrey Lofts’ Office and his men wore ‘Surrey Lofts’ branded clothing. His sign on the fence of my house was advertising ‘Surrey Lofts’, the email address he used to send us emails from was “Mark Grimshaw [email protected]” and when external drivers delivered materials to our property, or the building inspector attended or architect met with us – everyone stated that they had been asked to attend by ‘Mark from Surrey Lofts’.
I was therefore shocked one day last month when Mark Grimshaw stated that he had sold Surrey Lofts and was now going on his own.
We always believed Mark Grimshaw and Surrey Developments Ltd was trading as Surrey Lofts.
We were not aware that Surrey Lofts (Weybridge) Ltd was put into liquidation by Mr Grimshaw in 2019 and had been dissolved in 2022.
We also were not aware that Mr Grimshaw had sold the assets of Surrey Lofts Group Ltd to Surrey Lofts (Walton) Ltd and he placed Surrey Lofts Group Ltd into liquidation and sold Surrey Lofts (Walton) Ltd to someone who has worked for him on and off for a number of years.
We were not aware that we had been trading with just Surrey Developments (Walton) Ltd that is apparently nothing to do with Surrey Lofts.
Mr Grimshaw appears to still be working with his son out of the same Industrial Unit he was using as Surrey Lofts and driving the same Truck the Surrey Lofts Driver used to use.
When I started to challenge Mr Grimshaw on the massive inconsistent facts, he reported me to the local police for ‘Harassment’ and I was told to back off by the police – having done absolutely nothing wrong other than paid this man and his son plenty of money for work that has not been done to my house and also, we now know, lots of work done very badly.
Clearly, a man who knows the system !
We are now pursuing him through the courts, because despite him appointing a solicitor - they have now stopped responding to the very clear and obvious damming evidence of incompetence
they have been sent.
I suspect there is a lot more to come out about this man and his various companies, so if you have also had a poor experience in dealing with Mark Grimshaw and don’t wish to write a review in the public domain and don’t know who to turn to - please do send your complaints or concerns with work he has done for you to [email protected] and I will collate the information and pass it to my solicitor to review for us all.

Hi @WHSurrey, I'm so sorry you've gone through all this. We are also in the court process with Surrey Lofts due to extensive damage to our home that he caused. It looks like he's a serial director, opening and closing companies over the years. According to Companies House, Surrey Lofts Group, Ltd is still active and not in liquidation, though the accounts through Oct 2021 show the company has debts of over £300k.

I've had someone contact me privately recently who said they paid a deposit, and he later increased the contract price, then wouldn't return the deposit and claimed the company was in liquidation (although it isn't), so this seems to be a pattern.

I'll email your hotmail account some of the details of what we've been going through.

Christina
