How to Introduce Myself to Neighbours?

Hi,

I'm hoping some you ladies living in Leigh-on-Sea can help me - my husband and I are moving to Leigh in a couple weeks as we've just bought our first home. :)

My husband is 34, I'm 28 and originally from the US. As an American, I'm used to knocking on my new neighbours' doors with a home-baked treat as a kind way of introducing myself. I know this isn't necessarily the norm in the UK, but would this be completely socially unacceptable?

We're moving to Leigh after spending nearly two years in London and I hate the anonymity of living in such a big city - it seems neighbours only ever speak when something has gone wrong! I'm hoping this will be different in Leigh (everyone raves about the great community spirit!), and hopefully my neighbours will be receptive to the idea.

So, what do you guys think? If a new neighbour rang your doorbell with an armful of chocolate chip cookies, would you think it was sweet or totally crazy?

Thanks so much for taking the time to help. :)

I'm not from Leigh, I'm afraid. I think you should do it! As you say, it's not really the way here (I'm in a Suffolk town) but you may get lucky and find someone friendly who likes the gesture. I would! I've wanted to introduce myself to new people moving in but have felt too scared they'll think I'm crazy. I would be pleased if someone initiated. It would be nice if more people spoke to one another! If Leigh is so friendly maybe your neighbours will be more receptive.

If not, you'll hardly lose much. If a neighbour prefers not to say much more than hello you won't get much chance to feel awkward and it's their loss.

How's it going? Have you moved yet? There is a good community round Leigh and lots of nice places to meet people. I'm not far from there if you want any ideas on groups etc good luck

I’m not from Leigh, but my old best mate was, both myself and her would always have been up for free biscuits! And it would have been a definite way to make friends with me!!!

Hey how did you get on? Did you go for it? I moved from London to Leigh. When we moved our neighbours brought round a card and flowers which I thought was lovely. We have recent neighbours and dropped a card round. Personally I think it’s a lovely gesture. If you would like any tips on mummy groups etc I’ll be happy to help out with my relatively limited knowledge :-) x

Hi ladies - I just now saw your replies! Thanks again for all the help - I did end up introducing myself with cookies (just this weekend!) and everyone I met was so lovely. @Stickmangate and @Misscdm, I'll send you DMs now. :)
