Letter from the council re catchment

So they state they are starting with south and west and more is to come so thought it a good place toshare this. My child falls into this and nothing is confirmed but change needs to happen..

Stops the middle class lefties who won’t pay independent school fees but still want their kids at JGHS or Boroughmuir. Serve them right if they change the catchment areas so that their over priced flats at Marchmont/Bruntsfield won’t entitle their kids places at the top rated state schools in the city. See if they then put them into Craigroyston instead. Or they might just have to cough up those fees after all.

Marchmont and Bruntsfield are so close to their catchments schools that they're probably the only places in town that won't be affected.

I think it's no bad thing. The high school is Wester Hailes is tiny and I bet lots of kids in its catchment go to Currie or other nearby schools anyway.

Yep, new secondary planned near Maybury Baffled, a physical move planned for Currie and a refurb for Balerno. Think there are primary changes planned too but I'm past that stage so haven't been paying much attention!

Is maybury not close to craigmount?what area is the new school to serve?

I agree changed boundaries are overdue but the more central schools are unlikely to expand their catchments, more likely shrink as more houses are built on the old hospital sites and old school sites like sick kids, Astley ainslie and old boroughmuir.

There's a high school too for Maybury/Cammo area which will also take children from Kirkliston as the new Queensferry High School will be at capacity almost as soon as it's built.

And a new high school at west edinburgh to serve those new housing developments and turnhouse. Goodbye green belt, hello more St Johns Road pollution!

I live in South Queensferry Parrish and can see the green belt being concreted over, house by house. It makes me very sad.

Info sent out by school / council states the following
Need to build new West Edinburg secondary. Two options for site of this school. Either Maybury area or Ratho Station area. The primaries feedin into this school will be Ratho Station ( no longer feeding into Craigmount) Ratho (No longer feeding into Balerno) new Maybury PS. Also possibly Kirkliston but this is undergoing separate consultation and has 3rd option of feeding into new Winchburgh school.

New South Edinburgh secondary to be built in current Juniper Green catchment. Feeder primaries will be Juniper Green, Nether Currie, Clovenstone and Canal View. Wester Hailes sec to be demolished.

Sighthill will feed into Forrester instead of WHEc.

Lots of change coming

Jubejube it would be quite a catchment change if Bruntsfield fed into Craigroystane! Not sure what your point is, people try to live in catchment of high attaining school shock?

Jubejube. I find the idea that because someone may be able to afford private school fees that they should be morally obliged to use private schools quite daft. What happens if you support and believe in the state system? What if you are keen for your children to have local friends instead of having friends scattered across a wide area. What if you live next door to your state school? What if you are ideologically opposed to a two tier education system? I could go on.

To be fair, I do think that Edinburgh is quite unusual (for Scotland at least) in the number of children who are privately educated. I read it's around 1 in 4 in Edinburgh.

I'm not sure exactly where Jubejube is coming from, but it is irritating when people criticise others for privately educating their children whilst merrily paying well over the odds for property to ensure their offspring go to the best performing schools. Either way you have to pay and the ability to do so is a privilege which isn't available to a lot of people. I can understand why some people feel bitter towards those who can afford school fees but choose not to pay them. They may not be morally obliged to do so, but often you'll find the same people questioning the morals of those who do.

There’s an important principle at stake here. All of our children are entitled to a place at a school provided by the state for the benefit of all. I can’t imagine why anyone would feel bitter towards any parents taking up their entitlement to place at a state school. Do the bitter people also feel this when those same people get an appointment at the GP, or have an operation on the NHS rather than paying to go private?

We are entering dangerous territory if we wish to deny universal education/health care to those we don’t deem worthy of it.

I don’t disagree duck, I’m just pointing out that choosing the state school route doesn’t make someone morally superior. The playing field never has and never will be level. Not all schools are created equal and you pay for the privilege of attending a good school whether it’s via inflated property prices/rent or by paying school fees. Either way it’s not an option open to all. I don’t think people are bitter about people taking up a state school place, just their morally superior attitude towards others when they do.

There is also a 2 tier system when it comes to health. Take the meningitis vaccine which was rolled out to babies of a certain age but not older children. You could get it done privately but only if you could afford at couple hundred pounds to do it.

There is a valid conversation to be had about private education. However this thread was started to discuss the massive proposed changes to state schools in Edinburgh. Personally I think it would be a shame if jubejube managed to derail it. Might stop others posting if it feels like the old bun fight.
The majority of children in Edinburgh attend state school.

Hi everyone I didn’t post this to fire up the state vs private debate or how certain schools catchments are high priced housing only.. just that change is finally here, I don’t think it will be easy and not everyone will be happy. Building new schools is a big commitment and the shifting of primary schools to feed into different secondaries will hit a lot of families regardless if they have a preference for another school they might have older siblings already at what was to be their high school.

This is one area of Edinburgh, more is to come .. I don’t see a change to catchment for jghs unless they push again to relocate Gaelic to tynecastle but I’d say there is a good chance there will be changes /a cut to the feeder schools to bourghmuir as it is already over capacity for the new building..
I posted to see what others thought of these changes and the commitment to change which has been a long time coming .. didn’t mean to start a bun fight! But fire away!
