It is that time of year again, when schools across the borough throw open their doors and invite prospective pupils and parents to experience for themselves what their school is all about. Below, we share a message from David Astin, Principal of Harris Girls' Academy Bromley, a thriving school with a brace of newly built facilities to show off.

Welcome to Harris Girls’ Academy Bromley

It’s a good time to visit us. We recently completed a two-year period of construction and refurbishment that has equipped us with state of the art facilities in science, technology, art, music and dance, as well as fantastic Learning Resource and Sixth Form Study Centres.

The new build will support us to take our already strong academic performance to the next level. This year HGABR achieved it’s best ever GCSE results, with 80.4% (basics 4+) A-C or 4 and above grades in English and Math’s, compared to 66% last year. The percentage of students achieving the EBacc (4+) (A-C or 4 and above in the core academic subjects) was 51.4% this year - up from 39% last year, against a national average of 23% in 2016. (EBacc 5+) 42.1%. 7 girls achieved the new 'super grade' 9 in English with 13 grade 9's between them. 67% of those who sat Latin GCSE achieved an A/A*.

HGABR A Level results were as amazing, with the pass rate across all subjects was 100%. A and A grades were up 12 percentage points on last year, taking the total to 22%, and over half of students achieved A-B grades. The average grade was a B-, up from a C in 2016.

As a local parent, I fully understand the hopes and aspirations families have for their children’s education. And, as Principal of the academy, I am both proud of our success and excited to help more and more of our students meet these aspirations.

HGABR aims to provide exceptional, all-round education for girls in Beckenham and the surrounding community. With specialisms in science and enterprise, we are breaking traditional boundaries by encouraging our girls to study and have careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Our curriculum is broad, with all the core subjects as well as exciting additions such as Latin and Mandarin. Our teachers are hugely committed and always make time for individual students, teaching them in small groups or one-to-one if they are struggling with a particular subject or topic.

In addition to celebrating our students’ academic achievements, we encourage a balanced approach to education through attentive pastoral support and an engaging range of extra-curricular opportunities including Football, Dance, Young Enterprise, Cheerleading and Lego Robotics League.

As part of the Harris Federation, our most able students are part of the ‘Harris Experience’. They join their peers from other Harris Academies to access a spectacular cultural and academic enrichment programme. So far this has ranged from learning the art of auctioneering at Christie’s, to experiencing a day of lectures at Oxford University.

We believe that every girl can and should achieve their full potential and our commitment is one of ensuring the girls develop a love of learning, a passion for enquiry and enterprise and a dedication to being the best that they can be. This is encapsulated in our motto which is All Can: We Will.
