Consultation on NHS prescriptions in Lambeth

NHS Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is seeking the views of local people on proposals to make some changes to prescribing guidance around over-the-counter medicines, malaria prevention medicines for travel and selected travel vaccinations. The consultation starts on 3 April and ends on 26 May 2017.

The CCG is proposing to no longer support the routine prescribing of the following products:

Self-care medications for acute (short-term) illnesses, minor ailments and health supplements
Prescriptions for malaria prevention medicines for travel
Prescriptions for selected travel vaccinations
Dr Adrian McLachlan, a local GP and Chair of Lambeth CCG said:

"If, following the consultation, the proposals are taken forward, the CCG believes they will support us to both contain the costs of medicines on the local NHS budget and also to contribute to improving the quality of care available to local people.

"We believe that the proposals for over-the-counter medicines will support the CCG's aim to better help people to manage their minor and self-limiting conditions and, at the same time, allow GP time to be focused on those most in need, including out of hours services. Our aim is to free up clinician time for those local people who have more complex healthcare needs and who need more active support in managing their health.

"The proposals to change existing local guidance to discontinue malaria prophylaxis (prevention) medicines available on NHS prescription for travel have been supported by public health specialists. If taken forward after the consultation, the guidance would bring Lambeth in line with national policy. Lambeth is one of only three areas nationally offering malaria prophylaxis on prescription through the NHS.

"Our proposals to change guidance to discontinue providing selected travel vaccines will clarify and standardise how the vaccines mentioned are provided in Lambeth."

These proposals are part of Lambeth's plans within the community-based care workstream of the South East London Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP), Our Healthier South East London. Similar discussions are taking place in each area within the South East London STP footprint.
