Family Fun for all this February Half Term
Waterside Arts Centre
It may seem like only yesterday the kids were off for Christmas, so how is it almost February Half Term!? Fear not, Waterside Arts Centre has it covered with a jam-packed spring season, complete with family shows and movies ideal for wet winter days and for silencing the standard cries of “I’m Bored...”
Join Cbeebies regular Patrick Lynch as he brings to life the madcap adventures and heroic tale of everybody’s favourite feline, Puss in Boots. Presented by Lyngo Theatre from February 14-16, this classic furry tail features puppets, hidden trapdoors, a working windmill and an avalanche of fruit and nuts – all performed on a sloping stage. It is an ideal show for first time theatre goers, and is recommended for ages 4-8.
Little people are also in for a treat on Friday 17th February, with Blunderbus Theatre Company’s delightful and brand new adaptation of the timeless tale of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Brought to life with an irresistible blend of music, puppetry and storytelling - set in an enchanting and magical toy shop - this funny and heart-warming show is ideal for 3-7 year olds and their big people too.
In Lolly Pops and Circus Props on Sunday 19th February, children not only get the chance to listen to the exciting stories of Lolly - as she runs away from the circus to embark on new adventures in the big world – they can join in too. Fusing songs, circus skills and oodles of imagination, Artful Playground present a wonderfully interactive and imaginative theatre experience for all the family.
For older kids, who fancy a spot of spying this half term, we have the very thing. Join experienced and professional forensic scientists, SPI ( Science, Participate, Inspire) for a full on espionage experience – getting hands on and up close to the real life work of crime scene investigators. White suits, gloves, masks and all the other essential kit for a day of finger-printing, clue-hunting and code breaking will be provided. Forensic Science in Action is suitable for ages 7-11 and runs on Monday 13th February, from 10am to 3pm. You bring the packed lunch and we’ll bring the crime scene!
Mini movie fans have two great films to choose from on Monday 20th February, with Shaun the Sheep Movie and Flushed Away. Both films are suitable for all ages and pre-schoolers are even half price! For all fans of the loveable sheep and animation of all kinds, there is also still time to catch Waterside Arts Centre’s acclaimed exhibition, Puppet Masters Return with Aardman Studios, running until April 1st. This fantastic exhibition is packed full of original props, puppets and production artwork from many of Aardman’s most famous films and characters. From Timmy Time and Wallace and Gromit to the Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists! this really is the perfect half term treat for film fans big and small. Entry is free.
If you prefer your entertainment a little more lively and raucous, join us on February 25th for a spot of ComedySportz - our monthly improv show. Largely aimed at ages 8+, this comedy-fuelled evening features two teams as they battle it out with wit and wacky songs in quick-fire rounds, sketches and games. Audience participation encouraged - sense of humour essential.
Our weekly Family Club will be in full swing during February Half Term too offering a range of crafty activities for little makers and their handy grown-ups. Make a small reindeer to mount on your wall using paper pulp, wire and tissue on Saturday February 11th; in celebration of our Aardman Exhibition, create a clay 3D cheese and cup of tea fridge magnet on Saturday 18th February or a 3D card on Saturday 25th February.
