Moving to Altrincham

Hi All,
We are moving to Altrincham in mid of July and recently finalized a house in west Timperley. I have a son who will be going to Year 3 from March.

Looks like we will be getting Broadheath primary school as the address is in catchment area. Park road is 0.3 miles away but chances are very slim to get this school. I would really appreciate if you all can help and share some info about Broadheath primary school. I saw school ratings on different sites and was OK with it. But on the other hand came across some threads not recommending this school though they have been posted in 2012/13.

I don't have any experience of Broadheath primary sorry but both mine go to heyes lane in Timperley which is a lovely school.

If you are close to park Road you will be close to heyes as well I would imagine as they are quite near to each other

Are you on FB Shri? If so, there's a closed group called Sale, Timperley and Altrincham Mum and Dads Social that has got a few thousand members and is v active. I'd ask to join the group and ask there - people often ask similar questions and get lots of responses.

We will likely be relocating to Manchester from London soon because of my husbands job. I wondered whether anyone could give me some advice on this?
I contacted Manchester City Council to ask whether they could tell me which schools would be able to offer my daughter a place (she is currently in year 1) in order that we would know where to buy a house. We were considering Disbury, Sale and Altrincham. Apparently we need to pick 3 schools and see if they have space. So do we do this while still in London or is it best to move to our preferred area and then complete the form?
I am really struggling with the logistics of moving such a long way with children especially concerning we need to think about schools and I am aware the schools in Manchester are as oversubscribed as they are in London.

NJ Cav I am jealous. All those areas are great but altrincham is stand out best. Choose sale or altrincham and you will be in Trafford where schools are great. What age group are you looking at? You won't go wrong with altrincham for schools and as you're moving south to north you should be able to afford the houses that go with it. What's you're budget just so I can go green 😁

NJ Cav I agree that Altrincham is the best of the areas you have listed for education, but the schools are oversubscribed. As the OP has suggested, you will be allocated a place at a school with availability, which may be a school such as Broadheath which doesn't have a great reputation (although I have no personal experience of it) and you may have to go on a waiting list for schools closer to home or which you could prefer. I don't think the LA will offer you a place until you have exchanged contracts - I may be wrong - which makes it difficult because you don't want to buy a house where you have no chance of a local school!

njcav Didsbury comes under Manchester City Council and Sale/Altrincham comes under Trafford Council.
Trafford is considered one of the best education areas outside of London. We moved from Manchester CC (Didsbury) into Trafford (Sale) for that reason.

We moved to Hale last May and had to get our son a place in reception outside of the normal school application process. It was a pretty long winded thing but in summary required us to not only be able to show our tenancy agreement but to also prove that we had sold our previous property. So bear this in mind. Having said that we applied to Stamford Park Infants which is highly oversubscribed and we got a place no problem. I can also tell you from experience this year that in my sons class there has been a lot of movement and there have been times where there have been 2 or 3 places available in his class because children have left. Whilst the school places are hard to come by around hale/altrincham, the area is upwardly mobile so there is always lots of coming and going. If you are considering Hale I would highly vouch for SP Infants. A brilliant school and my child is very happy and settled there. The new headteacher is brilliant and they have lots of plans for the school going forward, including forest school for reception that starts this september. Good luck with the move, I did it with 2 DCs and 9 months pregnant....I don't envy you!!

NJCav, if you call the schools they can tell you whether they have a place. We are moving to Didsbury and this is what I did. Also if you look on right move at a house and check the school checker, broadly speaking, the under subscribed schools will have places. Didsbury schools are generally over subscribed so I would check first with school. Some councils like Cheshire East keep a spreadsheet of places which makes things much simpler. I was not prepared to risk not getting a school place when I could live anywhere. Manchester city council told me themselves that some kids don't get allocated a place AT ALL. That didn't inspire confidence

Hale is next to Wythenshawe isn't it? I've heard lots about it.
