Hi Mumsnetters, I need some help and advice on the school system in Scotland.
DH has been offered a job in Glasgow starting in September, we currently live in England so are looking at a move.
I have a DD age 8 who is July born and a DS age 7 who is April born. Will this be P5 and P3 in September? Does anyone know if this is this equivalent to year 4 and year 2 in England? (They are in Year 4 & 2 at the moment) I'm worried that this means repeating a year which would cause problems if DH gets another transfer back to England as they would then be a year behind.
I've also read that your school year starts mid August, so they will miss the first month?
This is all very exciting but very daunting, so I really appreciate your help.

Based on their birth dates, your DD would normally go into P5 and DS would go into P3 after the summer. As the curriculum is different, you might be best to speak to the prospective school about the levels they are currently at. In theory Reception in England is P1 here but in reality, the first year at school here is more formal than what I know of a reception class?
The new year begins mid August.

Thanks, the info really does help.
I think I really need to speak to a school but until we can arrange a visit we don't know where we want to live so I don't know which school to contact.

The schools in East Renfrewshire are very strict on catchments as well, so where you stay will dictate which schools your DC's can access. Plus the housing market is very quick indeed, so if you see something that fits your purpose-get in fast as you can.

It might be worth calling the local authority to see if they can advise how to proceed on this basis.

For info, my dd and nephew are the same age. One in English school system, one in Scottish. Both started at the same time and what they've learned with regards to reading, maths, english etc etc is pretty much at the same level in both countries.

It's supposedly different, inasmuch as Receptuon is apparently much more like nursery rather than p1, but now they are in year 1 / primary 2, academically they are pretty much at the same stage and level for most subjects too.
