School Registration- January

My family is moving to Newcastle in a couple of months and I would like to register my kids in school. I was surprised to hear that this might prove complicated. My husband will be working at Newcastle University and we would like to live not too far away from his work.

Is there anything we can do to improve our chances of finding a good school for our nine-year-old and our six-year-old.

Which year would my six-year-old be in? She turned 6 in October. Here in Canada, she's still in kindergarten, which is not a compulsory year.
