Moving to Stamford

We are thinking of moving to Stamford from London and I would be interested to hear if anyone has experience of living in this area and what it is like. We are looking for good schools and a town with a bit of life with some cafes and decent shopping etc. Also, I'm aware that Samford if quite pricey, so does anyone have any suggestions for nice towns/villages not too far from Stamford? Thanks.

I'm moving from London to 12 mins down the road from Stamford (wittering) at the end of this month. I love Stamford, its independent retailers, coffee shops and friday market. Though there are some lovely villages around e.g. wansford, fotheringhay, Easton on the Hill they tend to be even pricier than Stamford outskirts and have a bit less life. Oundle has more life (market, pubs, cafes) but is again pricey - though nothing compared to London! Nearer Peterborough in say Castor or Ailsworth looks good value but I only know them to drive through. Not sure on schools - wittering okay but not looked further afield.

It may sound a bit wierd to have info on an area I'm yet to move to but my partner has lived there for 4 years and I am up there 3 days a week and most holidays.

Hi 1frenchfoodie, thanks for the information about the other villages around Stamford. We'll head up there soon and check them out. Having lived for so long in London, it is a bit scared moving 'out to the sticks' and wondering whether there will be enough stimulation/whether it will be too much of a culture shock. I actually went to uni in Norwich and I remember that the locals didn't have much good to say about Peterborough, but I don't know if this was justified as I only passed through it briefly.

I live in Stamford but we are actually relocating for my husband's job! (House on the market). Wrote a long post but mumsnet or the phone swallowed it allAngry Stamford is lovely, Londoners do move here, some even commute. Anything in particular you would like to know, LollieB?

Hi LollieB,
We moved from London up to a village near Stamford. I would definitely recommend it. We're in The Deepings, it's less expensive than Stamford, we moved here for the good schools and community spirit, we have since decided to home educate but I wouldn't live anywhere else, it's lovely. There is surprisingly a lot to do in Market Deeping and there is a beautiful tea room called Lilli's, there are quite a few parks, one is a big one and there's plenty to do for children of all ages, there's a big Tesco as well and a pleasant doctors surgery. Everyone is so friendly, it does take a bit of getting used to as in London not many people talk to each other, a lot of Londoners move up here actually. There are some independent shops in Deeping and it's 7 miles to Stamford and 7 miles to Peterborough I believe, both drives take only 15 minutes. The only thing we use in Peterborough though is the train station haha, 45 minutes in to central London if you do miss London. Stamford is lovely, especially the restaurants and strangers actually stop to talk to you (hubby found this very odd at first). My husband was born and bred in London and every time he goes back there he comes home very very grateful as we believe it's a much better quality of life here.
Hope you find somewhere that you love! :)
Kim x

Hey, I live in Barnack near Stamford and commute to London each day. There's quite a lot of people who commute from Stamford.

School wise, some of the village schools are really good like the one at Uffington and in Barnack, but the villages themselves are quite quiet. They're only 5 minutes away from Stamford though.

Kim is right though, the Deepings allow you to get a lot more for your money and have their own community within a short drive of Stamford and Peterborough.

Hi,
I'm planning to move to Stamford this summer when my son finish reception in July. Can anyone recommend some schools? I was thinking Malcolm Sargent (if I write it correctly) , Bluecoat is outstanding but was required improvement before so I'm bit suspicious here. Don't they just push kids to the limits to get outstanding? Any other ideas? Church schools maybe?

And for the area are there any no go places or really fancy spots to live in?

Any help will be great as Mr Google doesn't cooperate. He gives me only some old stuff.

Pls help good people of Stamford!

Hi @Missmolli7

We are moving to Stamford in 2 weeks from London. Its taken ages to find a house and school but finally things have come together.

When and where are you moving to? Have you had luck finding school places etc?

Oakham is defo worth a look. It is less than 20 minutes from Stamford and has a good selection of shops, cafes and restaurants. It is also has Rutland Water on its doorstep.

The state secondary school in Stamford does not have a great reputation. The private school is excellent.

Bourne is popular for its state Grammar School & lots of children bus from Stamford. It is a good sized town & property is much cheaper. Bourne Woods is on the doorstep.

The Deepings are lovely, as are the villages between Deeping & Stamford, it just depends how many amenities you want within walking distance. Market Deeping has good restaurants & cafes, plus a few boutique shops & banks. There is a very efficient bus service to Stamford & the option of three well rated secondary schools: Bourne Grammar, Deepings School & Arthur Mellows Village College.

Good luck with the move! I would suggest a chat with a local estate agent, maybe Briggs in Deeping.

Hiya everyone, Sorry to "Nudge" this post but I live in Stamford (Lincs) and run a local buy and sell it group here, Unlike other buy and sell it groups I make sure that the people in the group are locals or within a 7 mile radius so people from PB are not allowed and other places out of the boundary.

I hope you settled in and love the place like most of us do here...isnt Christmases just amazing eh its like a time warp back into the 70's...the most unspoiled town in the country.

Cheers.

We have recently moved to Stamford, I’m a single mum of 4 great kids and I’m looking for a babysitter. I run my own business and need to work a long day in London on a Monday, ideally starting 5.30-8.30/9pm as they go to after school club. Does any one know anyone who might be interested. I really hope so thank you rachel
