Can you help Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes?(1 Post)
Please allow me to introduce myself, I am the Chairman of Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes (a registered charity No: 1155983) and the reason for this post is twofold.
Firstly to explain what we do. As the name suggests, we supply an out of hours service to transport blood, blood products, frozen human baby milk, x-rays and medical equipment around the county at no cost the NHS or Hospitals.
And secondly, to ask if you knew that donor breast milk is the next best thing to a mother’s own breast milk, donor breast milk contains a variety of protective factors which help protect a sick premature baby from infection. As these babies are very prone to catch infections they need all the help they can get.
After mothers donate their surplus milk to the Human Milk Bank, and after it is screened, pasteurised and frozen, the milk is then stored in the Milk Bank until it's required by hospitals. It is then collected and delivered to hospitals in the county where they keep a small stock, but this currently costs the hospitals £120+ each time as they are using couriers or taxis. Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes are willing to do this for free, at no cost to the NHS or the Hospital, we will even, if required, collect and deliver the frozen milk urgently.
Obviously this service comes at a cost to the charity and that's around £25.00 for each Milk Bank collection and delivery and this is where you, as members of Mumsnet come in. We would like to know if any of the members would be willing and able to hold fundraising events on our behalf? Or you may even be in a position to join the group as a volunteer (we are always looking for new members who are willing to share the work load, or even ride for us, subject to criteria).
Please have a look at the following links for more information on us and Human Milk Donation.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message and if you feel you can help in any way, or you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. If you have a group that you think may like to know more, please contact us and we can arrange to give a presentation to explain who we are and what we do in more detail.
