Hello and welcome to anyone who has opened this thread.

Having started a thread on the main MN website, someone suggested I try this, so here goes.

I have a 6 month old boy. As a new mum, people started asking me about schooling. I started to look into it and began to get scared. I will try to keep this as brief as possible.

Neither myself of my partner are religious. We have never intended to get our son christened. However when I researched local schools, their admissions criteria, their ofsted reports and spoke to local parents, I began to get concerned.

It seems that the normal thing to do (for some, not all) is to lie about your beliefs in order to get your child a place at a church school. Now, I would like my child to attend a non faith school but the better schools are the church schools. I have never been so torn about a decision in my life. Do I lie about my faith in order to get my son into the good school? I just don't think I can do this.

The oversubscription to these schools are also a joke.

Someone on MN suggested getting together like minded parents or teachers in the area. She suggested we could band together and create a new free school which would provide good quality rationalist education.

Sorry if this post is disjointed but my boy has just woken. I want to post this thread now just to get it out there and see what people think. Please see this link: www.gov.uk/set-up-free-school
