Can anyone recommend choosing between state primary school and prep school if living in South Norwood?

Hi
I have a little boy 14 months old and I've started researching schools for him. I looked at the Ofsted reports for the schools in my vicinity and I've also ordered a copy of the Good Schools Guide to gain insight into the prep schools in Croydon.

Please does anyone have any ideas on options for an outgoing, lively little boy in this area?

Many thanks

My boy goes to Crosfield Nursery in Elborough road, I cannot fault it.
There are several quite good primary schools in the area, so there is a choice. If you Catholic, the best by far would be St Thomas Becket primary. If not, then Whitehorse Manor. Other better ones are Ryelands, Cypress, Monks Orchard. South Norwood primary improved a lot after Ofsted visit. People like Woodside school, but you might not get into catchment depending on where you live.
I am a bit fed up with S.Norwood in general (more so, Croydon area), but at least there is a decent choice of primary schools, which is lovely.

Thanks for this. I had no idea that there was such a wide selection of schools in the area! You sound like you've been living here for a while given you know so much. And a you say at least you have options when it comes to educating your little osne.

From your knowledge, is it the case that a child will get into one his choices or are the schools oversubscribed? I just want to hedge my bets in case I need to register at a prep just in case...

Sorry its me the same person just changed nickname. Yes I have been living in the area for about 4 years. It depends on the catchment, really. You can find 2010 catchments on Croydon council website, primary school admissions leaflet - you will have an idea whether you will get in or not. And also, going to school's nursery does not guarantee you a place at all!

For private schools, your best option is South Croydon or Dulwich. My son currently attends Elmhurst boys' school in South Croydon, although we live in South Norwood, it's about a 15 minutes drive. Let me know if you need more info about the school.

Best Wishes x

Hi Natural, thanks for this. I am still in the valley of decision. I think I'm inching closer to deciding on an independent after all.

What did you consider when deciding on Elmhurst over a state school? Did you look at Cumnor House? And at what age did your son start Elmhurst - if at a young age did you do nursery first? Of course I am grateful for any info that you have.

Many thanks
