Anyone else excited about the Riverside Museum opening tomorrow?

Or is it just ds?

I made the mistake of telling him it'd be open by the time we got back from holiday (yesterday) but was a week out. Had a half day today due to school induction and had him mithering about the "new transport museum" all the way home.

"I think it is open now" "I know about these things and it is open now" "lets just go and check because it's probably open now" ad infinitum.

We're going on Thursday. After that it'll revert back to a ds and dh day out thank the lord.

Just back & very impressed! I didn't realise it would be so busy, the schools not having broken up yet, but of course it was hoaching with school trips plus it's the first week.

If you're thinking of taking a car then I'd really advise considering public transport instead as the car park is pretty small and there aren't really many places to park locally. It's about a 15 minute walk from the old transport museum/Kelvingrove, about 10 mins from Partick station and I did see a bus stop outside but not sure what numbers.

Anyway, I like the layout and there's way more stuff than the old transport museum. Great views of the Clyde out of huge picture windows at various places and of course the Tall Ship is there as well now (still a charge to visit it).

There were quite a few older gentlemen collaring staff and complaining about it not being the same as the old place (especially re: most of the cars being mounted on platforms on a wall rather than you being able to walk round them), but my uncle still chunters on about how they ruined Kelvingrove with the refit - I guess people like things to stay familiar.

The street is very good with more shops etc to go into (you can get your photo taken in the photographers and look at it on a screen), but they did say there'd be 3 streets and the other two are a bit of a con - more rooms of displays than proper street scenes, and they haven't replaced the cinema, it's just in a display room with the screen there but no seats etc except some mounted on the wall. I used to like sitting in there watching Tom & Jerry cartoons..

As not a huge transport fan per se, I like all the other context displays - lots of outfits, the shop scenes etc. It'll definitely bear many more visits before we've seen everything properly and once things quieten down a bit it'll be a great place to meet up with people for a coffee.

So, big thumbs up from me, double thumbs up from dh & ds.

Oh, thanks for that description Smile.

I cannot wait to go with DSs - we'll maybe wait a couple of weeks in the hope it won't be quite as busy anymore.

... and then it will be full of parents looking for something to do with their kids during the holidays...... Wink

BTW - have you seen that there is going to be a meet up in Glasgow next Thursday?

They've got two cafes and it seems to be very similar to Kelvingrove in that there's a waiter service cafe up the stairs (which we didn't visit) and a self-service coffee place with sandwiches/cookies/muffins etc.

As far as nice cake goes, orange and cranberry muffin was about as nice as it got although the biscuits looked ok. They'd make a fortune if they invested in some decent "home" baking. Maybe they will when things calm down a bit.
