12 week scan at York Hospital

Can anyone shed any light as to whether there is a backlog of scans at York Hospital?

I had my BA on 7th June and was told York had a backlog. I'm 11 weeks + 1 day (12 weeks on Monday according to MW) and I haven't even had a scan appointment sent through.

I've opted for the Nuchal scan and this should be done before 13 weeks + 6 days. Since York have only offered it since April (according to my MW) I was wondering if they were having problems keeping up with demand.

I would call your mw to check. Friends who are pregnant at the moment have said they have been given a date when they can call to book their appointment.

I think they've had some capacity issues for a while as two friends have had scans at Selby because there was more space there. If you are concerned about getting your scan you can ring the lovely ladies at PALS and ask them to find out what's going on.

Thanks. What's PALS?

Phoned up today. They haven't even got me on the system yet. I'm 12 weeks today. It's been 2 weeks since my booking in appointment. Was told I'd be lucky to receive an appointment this week. Not impressed.

Who did you ring? The clinic? Did you try PALS?

No. I've found their website too complicated - not sure what they do/offer or how they can help.

The MW's dates has me at 13 weeks on Monday and STILL no appointment. They did tell me to ring back on Monday if I still haven't heard from them. I am so disheartened by the whole process. This is my first pregnancy and I really did think I'd receive better care than this. I've gone from feeling angry to incredibly upset.
I'm thinking of changing my plans and going with Hull Royal Infirmary instead.

pals - this explains how they can help. E-mail then and they'll get it on Monday and can chase the clinic then.
Generally the standards of maternity care in York are good. I don't know what HRI is like but I would check that out carefully before making a decision because this disorganised aspect aside, York is a good and safe hospital

I know. I chose York because I had an operation there 2 years ago and I was very impressed. Also the hospital is easy to find and slightly nearer than HRI. I have friends who have given birth there and said it was good. I won't be making any hasty decisions until Monday - until I've spoken with the antenatal team at York. I have one more day of post (today) and then I will be ringing during my break at 10am on Monday if it hasn't arrived and I'll be insisting on an appointment there and then or I'll be making a formal complaint.

PALS cannot be contacted on a weekend - so much for reaching someone who can give 'on the spot' advice! Anyhow, I have emailed a formal letter of complaint to them. I've given them contact numbers so there is no excuse not to get back to me.
I now have to find a way of getting my stress levels down!

Did you get anywhere?

Yes thank you! After emailing a complaint letter on Saturday 25th June, an appointment came through n the Monday so it was already on it's way. The appointment was for 7th July when by my dates I would have been 13 weeks and 6 days! On the Tuesday, one of the managers phoned me whilst at work, apologised for various things (I was feeling 'better then', not hormonal as I was at the weekend!) and said I had an appointment on Thursday 30th June at 2:25pm.
It's a good job I did because the 7th July appointment would have put me over for the nuchal scan by 2 days as I am now (today) 13 weeks and 6 days. Baby was 'resting' or immobilised due to my huge bladder. The sonographer had to ask me to go and pee and when I returned, baby got the hiccups and showed off his/her trampolining skills and forward rolls.
All fine. Thank you so much for the help. Without knowing to contact PALS I would certainly be still waiting for my scan. You've been a gem.

(PS. Parking MUCH easier now they have the multi-storey. Next task - find where the delivery suite is!!!)

i've had the same problem. i saw dr when i was 6 weeks, waited a month for midwife app, then another 2 passed still no scan date. phoned up, still wasn't on the system... OH managed to speed up process, but even then it took another week for letter to arrive.

i'm finally getting scan tomorrow in selby although i'm based in the centre of york! we said we wanted nucleal, but tomorrow i should be 14 +4 at earliest, so no chance!!

i'm the same, first pregnacny, no idea whats going on, but didnt expect treatment like this. not impressed. in fact really annoyed. i feel like i'm going through this by myself.

mumtobe79 - maybe we should book our labour room now and maybe then they might have a space for us... either that or they'll tell us to go home and come back in 2 weeks!!

Good to hear you got an appointment. Sorry it was such a pita to sort out.

Diasyvee - York are usually pretty good. Your experience is not typical. So sorry you have had this trouble. I've had three babies there and always had good service. Hope your scan goes well.

Thanks,

sorry - didn't mean to rant... just reread it, it did appear the ramblings of a hormonal mess :)

They clearly did screw this up but just to reassure you about giving birth there - I spent 3 months working in obstetrics there and 6 months working in paediatrics including SCBU and chose to deliver there. Had a really complex delivery which was handled superbly well. I wouldn't want to have my next baby (if I am lucky enough to have no. 2) anywhere else.

It seems the screw ups are very recent - since April. I did wonder about giving birth there though, especially as I'm 40 minutes away (live 20 minutes East of Selby) and WANT a hospital birth (being my first).
My closest is Goole but that can't offer the medical interventions I want available if the need arises and even so, if I went there, they transfer you to Scunthorpe which is further away than York (50 minute drive from us!)
I considered Castle Hill but like Goole, they would have to transfer me to Hull Royal which I know is only 2 miles further in distance than York but is actually more difficult to get to.
i will be sticking up twos if I get to hospital in the early stages of labour and they tell me to go home because by the time I would get home, it would probably be time to return! Panorama tonight discusses the MW shortage - another worry to add to my list.

Update on peanut - he/she has a 1 in 25000 chance of DS! 17 weeks and 1 day today!
