Any Parents out there refused places at St Mary's Leith

Hi, I'm trying to get other parents out there who have been refused a place at St Mary's Leith to lobby the Council for additional teachers/space to allow children the right to attend their local catchment school.

Were you denied a place at your catchment school?

Hi, yes my son has been denied a place too. With there being so many refusals I think there is a definite need for an extra class or teacher at least.

Hi Soo22 and jackedin, sorry that you have not got into your choice of school. Were you both in the catchment/ Baptised? You may have seen this already . This is the minutes of 15/03/2011 Edinburgh City Council Education Committee

Have the letters gone out?

Maggie, yes letters were out at the beginning of the week for p1 out of catchment requests. Not many were successful though, see todays evening news.

Have not got my letter yet. Maybe they are still considering it Hmm

It's been bound to happen sooner or later, in my view the council takes a very short term view of school places and tends to ignore what may happen in terms of growing population, or at least primary school age population in the area
We had to lobby to get portakabins as classroom at St Johns to accommodate the intake when my DS1 started primary, nearly 20 years ago!

What alternatives have they given to the pupils refused?

maggiethecat am I confused I thought you were outside Edinburgh looking to move and that you'd decided on Mary Erskines?

Hello fellow Leithers. St Mary's is fit to burst but good luck with your campaign. Are they only having one class this year? Seems very unfair to me.

My boys are at Hermitage primary and it is very good and I have also heard that Leith Primary is good too. Your Dcs will be fine wherever they end up. Smile

Ratspeaker, I put in the placement request before we committed to to ME, just in case. We are still outside of E'burgh and had no address when I made the application.

Part of the reason for going for ME is that we were very concerned that with the new changes it would have been unlikely for us to get places for both girls at the state schools we wanted.

I'm not tearing my hair out about not getting letter (thankfully) but just wondered where it's gone.

OP it's not your local catchment school though is it, it's your local faith school. You won't be denied a primary place within your catchment at another school.
I would worry more about the massive cuts in education the current council are bringing in and the impact they will have on your dc's education.

Might be worth phoning them on Monday. Good luck and I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Edinburgh council really are useless. They must have been well aware that this was going to be a bulge year - what with the ERI maternity services nearly going into meltdown 5 yrs ago and all the nursery applications 2 yrs ago so it isn't like they didn't have any warning. Sometimes i think they are deliberately crap to force families to move to Livingston/Dunfermline/Dunbar. It would also explain why, for the past 15yrs, Edinburgh council seems to have only given planning permission for 1 bedroom luxury apartments.

Monday is a holiday and the posties aren't working (as the Gyle sorting office just told me) doubt the cooncil will be either.

I'm years off this worry yet but it is interesting to see how incompetent Edi Cooncil is! It will in form my vote, that's for sure.

it could ruin my DD's life if she doesnt get into the school we want, so hope their incompetence only extends to the paperwork :(

don't have any option to go private, nothing available to suit DD's needs, so we are at their mercy.

it's primary, we were trying not to think about appeals before we got a decision, and were just waiting to see what happens but I am aware we may have a fight on our hands and have a rough idea of the process. Just don't really have the energy but would do it for DD!!

There are very few places at the school we want though (only 5 children in age 5/6 class) so if we get turned down as no places I'm not sure an appeal would get very far!!
