Hello new thread! Thanks Kickass.

So Mananny leaves tomorrow and we are wishing her lots of luck. I am leaving on Friday. Cali is off for a visit very soon and you and Ali have just come back. Didn't Bunkups go too? There's been a lot of to-ing and fro-ing on here!

My sister has asked for a shipping list and I don't know what to put on it, only weetabix for Dinner so far.

kickassangel · 04/07/2009 23:23

I think you mean 'shopping list' - you're getting obsessed with shipping things!

ok, you need
REAL champagne
marmite
bacon (well, maybe not)
clotted cream, scones, strawberry jam & fresh strawberries
Yorkshire Gold tea bags/leaf tea
yorkshire puddings
fresh bread
fondant fancies
jaffa cakes
marzipan

just trying to think hwat else i swooned over when i went to sainsbury's. it was all so wonderfully familiar & easy to know what I liked!

RE: the list above, there's at least one 'mexican' who posts sometimes, methinks possibly due to have a baby any moment. i haven't been on 'mainland' mn threads for a long time, but I think she posts on the 'only child' thread a bit, and sometimes here. Don't want to leave her, or any other out, so I hope no-one feels excluded if they're not listed.

Yes, shipping lists are taking over my life - I had no idea it was so complicated! Bloody Export codes.

I will def demand clotted cream and homemade scones. And fondant fancies. Good list, Kickass.

People can add and remove themselves from the list, can't they? I like when we have new people join us.

Did everyone have a lovely 4th?

Love the thread title

We had a nice day. Went to my parent's house on the lake for swimming and kayaking then had bbq, twinkie cake (an annual tradition) and a nap.

Weirdly they did fireworks on Friday and I think there are more tomorrow but no big official display today

SuperBunny · 05/07/2009 03:38

yeah, our fireworks were on fri, so we had a happy 3rd! dh got let out of work early, about 12.30. the big park that had fireworks had a band playing, huge bouncy castle things for kids, a climbing wall, all sorts going on. we met with friends & sat round drinking, chatting, listening to music. a bit like a festival. sadly, teh toilets were also a bit like a festival!

CAN YOU NOT GET CHAMPAGNE IN the states then?

Report
kickassangel · 05/07/2009 17:03

yanks call ALL sparkling wine 'champagne' they are the ONLY country I have come across which doesn't adhere to the international agreement, that only the champagne region can create champagne. not quite sure why.

you can get french champagne, but it's vv expensive.

have you just decided against moving here?

Well, not ALL of us do that.

Just the lazy ones...

Report
SuperBunny · 05/07/2009 18:26

I'd never noticed that. Not that I drink much champagne but I am sure people call it sparkling wine round here.

Now I really fancy some prosecco.

I remember a very patrinising 'friend' when I first arrived in the US who would speak to me very s l o w l y and LOUDLY to make sure I understood him. He said, "Now, this is a kind of cheese. CHEESE. We call it C H E D D A R. Do you know what Cheddar is?" I didn't like to tell him that, not only am I familiar with the cheese but also with the town from which it originates. Bless him!

Good luck mananny.

I went to cheddar a few weeks ago.

Did you know that Stilton isn't from Stilton? It was, apparently, made in Leicestershire & sold at the Bell in Stilton, which it then got it name from. If ever you're near it, THAT's agood pub to go to!

Ah, pubs. Never the same anywhere else. There's a 'welcome home' activity you should plan, sb.

is this the new thread for those who have moved to the states??? hope so. have just moved from london to austin texas. i'm originally a yankee but have lived in london for so long that i'm totally a fish out of water.

there doesn't seem to be any mumsnet equivalent over here. are there any good online communities? promise i'm not a total sad-o, do have a few real friends. maybe one or two;-) just missing mumsnet but also don't really feel too connected now that i'm in the states.

ok, bye y'all.

Ooo, I love Austin! Welcome mimsy.

I suggest the following:

mamasource
cafemom
mom's clubs
meetup

I don't really use any of them (well, I did dabble in meetup and have used mamasource) but know people who do.

Mmm, pub.

Oh dear, I really need to get over my aversion to any website with mom or mama in the title... don't I?

How's everyone doing. Thought I'd check in on the thread. Sorry that you're going, SuperBunny - you were very nice to me when I first posted here!

Really enjoyed the fireworks over San Diego last night - and Craig Ferguson doing the CBS show afterwards from Boston. Does anyone else have a bit of a giggle that they have 'Ere we go, ere we go, ere we go' as a 'patriotic song' here?

I heard it was also the tune of a British drinking song.

Report
CarmenSanDiego · 06/07/2009 15:53

Oh, that's 'My country tis of thee' - I stared in horror when I first saw all these Americans singing it misty-eyed.

I think the national anthem is The Star Spangled Banner though. Which to my ear sounds a bit like 'We wish you a merry Christmas' at the end.

Brilliant title, kickass.

Been busy and out the past few days. In-laws were here, and we were hardly home. And I'm copiously avoiding this thread as there are only a few more days that The Bunny will be here.
