Easter chocolate: Germany

We are visiting German friends for Easter and we live in France.
Could anyone with knowledge of Easter in Germany let me know if chocolate fish and bells (common in France) would be unusual chocolate shapes (and therefore make a good gift)?
Vielen Dank

Yes that would be unusual. German Easter shapes are eggs (small ones not the big boxed ones we have in the uk), bunnies, chicks and may beetles. I never saw fish or bells at Easter in Germany (used to live there. Was there for 17 years).

I don't ever remember seeing fish or bells either when I lived there :0)

Definitely no fish, bells would be Christmas.

The chocolate bettles in Germany aren't just beetles but ladybirds - they are symbolic of good luck and more common at new year but available year round.

Agree big eggs are uncommon but Aldi sells them this year. It's mainly rabbits though, showing the solid pagan traditional Rita even in staunchly Catholic Bavaria (where we live).

We're in France on holiday at the moment and bringing back chocolate ducks for the children and regional wine for the adults of the neighbor family who feed our fish/ bring in our post/ take our bins out while we're away.

*roots, not sure who pagan Rita is...

I'm on holiday in Austria and travelled through Germany last week. We saw lots of displays of Easter chocolates similar to ones we see in England, so rabbits, chicks and eggs. I think the things you suggest from France would make a lovely gift. Smile

Thanks all. Went to the chocolate shop this afternoon and bought fish and bells. They also had chocolate unicorns but that's definitely not a French tradition!
