After being a single mum for many years, I met a wonderful Australian. After much soul-searching, I took the plunge in November 2016 and moved with my 19 year old daughter, to Melbourne and what I hoped would be a better life. We were married in January 2017 and I cannot tell you how happy we were at the property of making a new life.
However, my work rights were denied and the financial strain made life a struggle as we only had one wage supporting us all.
Then, our visas were due to expire and we just couldn't afford to apply for anything more long term. Finally, we were left with no choice but to leave Australia 'voluntarily' with the help of the IOM( a branch of the UN). If we had not taken this offer, we would have been deported and not allowed back for three years, On February 7, we arrived back in the U.K., only to discover, we qualified for no State help - even temporarily- while we tried to find homes and jobs. It seems you have to pass a test now to prove how British you are, and I was told my daughter and I would fail.
Thankfully, the IOM funded 7 days stay at a B&B which ran out last week, so I've been selling things to keep us off the streets. I am so desperate now, I even started a gofundme campaign.

www.gofundme.com/keeping-safe

People need to know, even if they have a gap year or work abroad as a volunteer, they could face the same nightmare.I don't know what's going to happen to us, but I wanted to share my story with you.

.
