How to know that you should move?

Hmm When is it time to leave in a country? How to define it's a good place for you or there is a better place? Is the grass always greener? Is it fomo?

Family, friends, jobs, safety, culture, etc.

Calling all the expats to give me their view on adapting to a new place and deciding if that's the right one.

Star Cheers

Everyone comes to HK for the same reason ($$$$$) but everyone leaves for different reasons- current situations of people who are leaving -

  • got made redundant and haven't found anything else locally
  • got head hunted to do a job in another country or moved by employer
  • want dc to go to secondary school in UK and don't want to do international boarding
  • sick parent
  • fed up of pollution
  • fed up of dating scene (women)
  • fed up of housing costs/ size
  • want to live somewhere more chilled out

Everywhere's got it's compromises and I guess after a few years some of those compromises get too much, depending on your priorities.

Also, there are differences between the expat hubs., where few people intend to stay permanently, and places like Australia, where a lot of people move, always intending it to be permanent.

Habibi lol ...yes i suppose when you are where you ou are.
I'm where cantseeethewoods is and massively out priced because you are suddenly on local terms and still want to live well but can't afford the rent and every other reason she mentioned.

It's the hub thing for me - Cantseethewoods nailed that. Where we live now is very much a hub, and I'm over it completely. We've had a great time, but I now want to paint a wall, plant some veggies, get some pets.

I think that's why most people at our live stage (longish marriage, children approaching secondary age) move on from our little bubble. I just knew (and it IS me, he would stay for another 10 years if I agreed to it) it was time to put down some roots again.

I totally hear this. I guess when your priorities change you know it's time. We've been away for five years now, two countries and I want to settle soon. Just need to convince DH!
