Does anyone know the deal with kids car seats, 5 and 8yrs so no infant allowance, I'm assuming the car seats will be excess baggage, if anyone has any experience of checking car seats into the hold - thanks :)

Singapore Airlines baggage allowance is by weight, not piece. So as long as your total checked baggage weight including the seats is within your allowance, it will be fine.

The allowance starts at 30kg per person for economy with no frequent flyer status and goes up from there.

Air NZ lets you take car seats free of charge,

Strollers (including buggies), portacots and car seats (including booster seats), are exempt items from the baggage allowance (max. two pieces permitted), and can be carried in addition to the free baggage allowance. Read more about travelling with an infant.
