Moving to America with pre-existing PKD - healthcare as dependent

Hi all,

DH has been offered a job in New York working for a big multinational, so we expect healthcare should be provided. Only problem is I have Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) stage 3, meaning within 2-5 yrs I'll need a kidney transplant / dialysis. Does anyone have any experience of being the dependent of someone whose company gives a good health plan but you have a chronic condition with likely expensive operations to 'look forward' to?

We'll definitely look at the policy but just wanted to hear from real people who'd had anything like this and how company insurance dealt with things?

The problem is that, even with a good health plan, you will still need to pay co pays and deductibles and there are limits as to how much your insurance will cover. Also, there are surprise bills - your hospital may be in network but your anesthetist might not be so you could easily pay a few thousand more that you weren't expecting. A friend of mine recently broke his arm and, although he went to an in network hospital, bills that eventually added up to around $3500 just kept on coming.
I enjoy living here but don't trust the healthcare system at all - you will have to be very clear on what your policy covers and, even then, you might end up with a nasty surprise.

Don't forget that if you leave the uk for 12 months you are no longer covered here if you were to return.

That is only for temporary visits Head. If you return permanently you are covered again.
