All I can tell you is that I was born in HK and lived there until I was 12, and found it the most fantastic place to grow up! I went to Glenealy School, and then onto Island school.

However, this was a good while ago!!

I found that I could have a fair bit of freedom for a child of that age, and my parents found it a remarkably safe place to live.

Hopefully someone will come along with more up-to-date knowledge soon.

its expensive to house a big family
Your kids are older so its slightly easier but still a nightmare to get places.
That will be your priority.
That taken care of, its a fab place to live

V expensive for everything, v v safe, v exciting for buzz, nightlife, culture, shopping, sights, food, travel. And convenient- fab transport network so easy to get around. I personally found it stressful in a much-more-than-london way as it's SO crowded and hyped up. But then i lived right bang in the centre of it all which as a family you're unlikely to do. It has its peaceful havens too.

Thank you at the moment we are thinking dh goes first and we stay to allow dd1 to do her GCSE's then go from there.

Your main issue will be accommodation. Unless you can afford c. Hk$120k+ per month you will not find a 5 bed house on HK island. In fact, 5 bed houses are like hen's teeth. If you children could potentially share rooms so you only need a 3/4 bed that's definitely more realistic but you'd still likely have less space than you're used to. We have a large 3 bed apartment ( by hk standards) and I couldn't even contemplate living in it with 4 pre-teens / teenagers.

Re schools, do you want to keep them in the UK curriculum? If yes, your options are Harrow or Kellett schools. Both are expensive and oversubscribed but easier to get places further up the school so you'd probably be ok. Harrow will have a high percentage of boarders in the senior school. As an aside, there are no single sex schools in Hk. Not sure if that's a factor or not.

Personally if we are still here when my children are 13+ I will probably send then back to the uk to board because the Hk schools are fine but you get more for your money in the uk.

Just to let you know the French International school has an International section (in English) offers IGCSEs and they had some pretty good results this year.

Just another option to consider.
