Oh god the packers come tomorrow - can't see my way through being ready

We are making a major move next week. Packers come tomorrow and the house is a TIP. Awful. I have got everything out to sort it all and now an sitting surrounded by piles of stuff and feeling majorly overwhelmed. Can't begin to see how I will be ready and am really stressed. I hate this part of a nomadic lifestyle. Really, really hate it.

Anyone got any tips on how to keep ploughing through?

I HATE moving. It makes me want to make a bonfire & burn all my stuff rather than have to drag it around with me yet again.

I guess it is a bit like childbirth. The only way to get it over with is to get on with it.

Find an empty cupboard, boot of the car, garage somewhere and throw put all the stuff their not packing in it and I mean all the stuff. oUr packers packed the potty, kids juice cups full of juice kitchen towel among other things. I made the stupid mistake of thinking I was organised, ha how wrong was I. Stayed up till about 4am trying to sort it out and finally followed my own advice.

When they left I then pulled everything out and sorted it out.

I also had the luggage we were taking in the car for days before they came.

Music and chocolate and maybe a cheeky glass of wine..Good luck! But once you are done you'll be proud. I did it twice and it's painful. Where you moving to?

I wouldn't worry about it. They will have seen worse. If you're wigging out, just accept that the entire contents of your house (filled trash cans and all) can be just as easily organised the other end. In fact, more easily as the time pressure is gone.

We've just gone through this just over a month ago. Totally agree with the advice of putting everything you don't want them to pack in a cupboard or empty room out of the way. Our packers ended up packing my breast pump that I'd left on the kitchen side ready to wash after using it - disappeared into a box before I realised. That's not going to smell pleasant when our stuff is delivered next week.

And they will have seen worse. We were still sorting out stuff around them once they turned up. Was crap at the time but so much easier than having to pack it all yourself. Good luck!

I loved having the packers come. They don't care about the state of your flat they just want to get packed up and gone.
Agree about moving stuff you don't want packed. Full bin and litre of milk anyone?

Thanks for all the advice everyone. In the end, I put the computer down and just got on with it. Still don't feel ready but am really comforted by the idea that piles of junk are just as easy to sort at the other end.

Packers due in two hours. All things we need to take safely stowed in one room that they will not enter. Gin Tea in hand.

We shipped a full nappy bin and a tray of brownies that was cooling on the bench.

We shipped highly forbidden conkers. They were being moth repellents in our drawers, and sneaked in. Wouldn't even try to grow them in a rather dry Victoria.

Brilliant. I know someone who was having a G&T whilst the packers were there to try and make the whole thing less painful. When they arrived at their destination and unpacked, there was one glass with a rather withered lemon in it. The packers had packed the G&T...

I'll hold your hand in solidarity! Packers arrived here a few hours ago and it's hectic! House was a fair mess too as I've been sorting for weeks (in as much as you can with 2 DCs under 5).

They've been great so far - checking in each room what to pack or leave and are going through at an amazingly fast rate!

I do have a bottle of wine, takeaway menu and a large box of malteasers for later though......

DH flew home to 'help' and has been on a conf call since 10am!

God that sounds even worse than my situation. I have called DH and told him to pick up pizza on the way home. Maltesers would be amazing. We are 20 mins out from being done with day 1 of packers. They estimate a further 2 days. Weep.

This is my first overseas move so I'm excited but also bit nervous

Packers are fucking fantastic. We moved recently and just left them to it and went for a walk in the country and some lunch. As said, just put the stuff you need in a room and make it out of bounds - packers will do the rest. Did have them ship a whole big set of cheap Ikea shelving we were leaving behind once, didn't break it down just boxed it all up and shipped!

We're all done and container arriving first thing tomorrow. Packers have been fantastic, I can't believe how quick and efficient they've been. I will never move myself ever again!

IMO, that last thought also applies to the UK. We've done the move umpteen times ourselves with friends.
Paying the however many pounds it cost to have a proper removal company was just the best thing.

Hi Joan; well the container is here now. Will be glad to see the back of it. Packers have been great but some of our stuff has 'gone missing' in the move. We'd stowed stuff not to be packed and a few bits have walked off. Not unusual here and it wasn't anything too valuable but it makes me worry about how much of our stuff has actually gone in the crate and how much has been liberated. We won't find out for a few months and by that point there's not much we can do about it.
