Hello ! After much deliberating it looks like we may move to StGermain en Laye in the summer! In the end, our child got a place at Schnapper's school (bilingual america programme).
Any tips on life in the area?
Thank you :)

No, no tips at all. Just sooooooooo envious!. We lived in central Paris for a few years and always thought that if we stayed, we'd move to St. Germain en Laye. You lucky, lucky things. Have a wonderful time.

PS if you haven't come across MESSAGE, it's absolutely wonderful (a MumsNet for Paris and area). They'll be able to give you plenty of advice. www.messageparis.org.

I live not far away from Saint Germain en Laye. What do you want to know?

Hi,
Thanks culturemulcher I will join Message...
Brioche, I would like to know quite a few thigs, but in terms of practicality Are there many 'creches municipales' and in terms of extracurricular activities for kids (sports, centres aeres etc) is it any good?
Lastly, from Schnapper's street how far (by foot) is the RER A station?
Thanks!!

It's not far from Schnapper to the RER A but it IS up a hill. 10 mins? Check google maps if you want to be more accurate. However, would be very surprised if there isn't a bus. (Sorry can't say I have ever walked it). For creche municipale you want to check the mairie website and they will all be listed. Don't bank on getting a place! Are you working? If you aren't you have no chance at all and even if you are you might already have missed the commission for September places so you need to call the mairie asap. They can also give you a list of childminders (assistante maternelles) if need be. If you are not working and simply looking for childcare you have other options - creche associative for example, halte garderie or some of the private schools that take kids from 2 years old.
There are lots of extracurricular activities in Saint Germain. Check out the "assocations" page of the mairie website or look for the maison de la culture (I think the St G one is called La Clef?)
If there are other things you need to know, feel free to ask!
BTW it's a very nice town with lots going on so I'm sure you will find solutions to all of these things :)
