Dangerously high blood pressure

My husband has blood pressure that is off the scale. He was supposed to do a 24 hour test wearing a monitor that measured him every 30 minutes but it burst the capillaries in his arm and hand and was so painful that he took it off. So they have given him a monitor to use manually for the weekend but it's going off the scale now. That means higher than 240 / 140. I dont understand why the nurse didn't whack him on to some meds straight away. We are going to the surgery First thing and how to get seen asap but they keep pleading a shortage of doctors. Desperately worried as he has gone to bed with a headache he has had for 48 hours. Anyone been through anything similar?

As scary as this is, you might be better posting this in General Health, as most illnesses on this topic are very long term.e.g cancer, Parkinson's, whereas blood pressure problems, while dangerous, might get more traffic there.

This could be malignant hypertension which is considered an emergency. How long has the BP been>240/140?
I rarely say A&E but this needs to be looked at now.

We don't know how long but definitely since Wednesday. Appointment today at ten so I'll report back. Very worrying, We have just moved to the seaside,a dream come true, it would be so awful if our dream was shattered. Fingers crossed for a speedy and satisfactory outcome. Thanks for your reply

I would expect him to be given medication which will bring down his BP immediately, although they will no doubt want to conduct tests to see if they can establish what is causing the high BP.

Hope the appt. goes well.

It is high and hopefully he will be given meds straight away and further testing. My DP was sent on for loads of more cardiac testing and all was fine. The consultant actually said constant high is better then blood pressure that drops and then raises again and easier to treat I am in trouble there then so-

Well the go was very comforting and tactful. Now I'm Ramprinil and he'll increase the dose in two weeks after further bloods. My poor fellah is so tired though. Hopefully he'll improve quickly though now he's worried about side effects like loss of libido..... me?.......seriously not bothered

I've been on Ramipril for yonks - I am always tired, but then I was before I took it. Hopefully he'll feel better soon.

I have malignant hypertension which is controlled on ramipril - I suggest he takes it at night to start with as it can make you very tired (ime) also he should get his bloods done for cholesterol - mine was so high they could've made a good Camembert with it!

I was hospitalized with my hypertension - I went to the nurse for my smear and had my bp done. Was so high I had to go to hospital in an ambulance and was on coronary care!

I was 42 and not really overweight, healthy diet etc. it's hereditary

Hi there, I think your immediate crisis must have now passed, but I just stopped to say that we were in a rather similar situation 4 years ago. DH is now on regular ramipril, but his new normal is 140, 95. Never really gets any lower than that even with a 7.5mg dosage. Exercise helps, but he's too lazy. Overall it has become something we need to live with and manage - though it's nothing terrible! The worst bit has been the temper. Days when he forgets his meds, he can be snappy & shouty and I can immediately tell that he's not had his daily dose. I hope your DH feels better soon.

Hi Artistic He's got ramapril now, stopped smoking never thought he would! The low starter dose made little impact and now he is on 5mg possibly ramping up to 10mg in the future. The gp was very reassuring saying it's ok as long as he hasn't been walking about with it for years and years. Poor trout has jiggered his knee now so can't walk. If it's not one thing ours another. Thanks for the info though not sure how to tell one kind of grouchiness from another
