cant you buy an annuity with benefits (albeit reduced) when you die, or is that just before you convert?

nb you have to convert it eventually.

Yes, pensions are a gamble and I've got a certain degree of sympathy for those who refuse to save and plan to die young ...

But my money purchase scheme just builds into a pot. With that pot you can elect to buy yourself an annuity, and that annuity can include an option for a spouse to have a pension if you die early. It's more expensive of course, but still worth it, I think, unless your DP is much older than you.
