Luckily the card company noticed a strange spending pattern and stopped it - eh doesn't have to pay what the scammers have spent on it. One of the payments was for a paypal account so I'm hoping that means the police will be able to track down who did it via the paypal account. The card company are informing the police.

We just have no idea how its been done - not in a atm as he doesn't use his card n there. We went to a restaurant las tweekend where he used it - but the waiter sorted the payment out at the table infron of us. Very odd.

Sometimes the card machines can be altered to have a skimmer on them and of course you just put your card in and they charge it - they then use the card details to hand put it into the real machine later.

It's a bugger isn't it?!

Apparently petrol stations are the worst places for having your card cloned, but anywhere with a card reader and an unsupervised worker can be bad. Did the waiter fumble the card at all, accidently drop it on the floor and pick it up again for instance? The skimming machines are small enough to be strapped to an ankle.
