Renting with a bad revert

I'm looking to move from my rented home into a new one.

In our current tenancy we have been mostly good tenants. We have notified the landlord of any things that need fixing and paid the rent on time for 16 months straight. Last month we paid 2 weeks late and informed the landlord of why it was late and offered to pay half on the due date and half once we had the rest.

I'm worried they will give us a bad reference for this and we will struggle to move. Does anyone have any experience of renting with a bad reference?
