Self-employed - need advice about tax deductible computer

My laptop is close to death.

DH is in USA at the moment where he could buy me a nice, shiny new one for about 75% of the cost here.

But if it is bought overseas, can I still deduct the cost as a capital expense?

Thanks ...

Yes, you can. It doesn't matter where it's bought from, as long as it's for business use it's allowable

Thanks riksti

BUT
make sure it works in the UK
as the power and software options will not be the same

You should declare it at Customs and pay VAT. That brings the price back up to 90%, for an item that may not work properly in the UK and will have no guarantee/warranty. Is it worth it?

Aren't you allowed to bring in a certain amount of goods tax free from the USA?

What is the limit?

TalkinPeace Sun 23-Mar-14 18:06:05

£18 is the limit
AND
be very, very aware of the electrice, the USA work on 60 Hz, the EU on 50 Hz

Merguez Sun 23-Mar-14 18:07:02

Only £18????

Really????

TalkinPeace Sun 23-Mar-14 18:17:47

stuff the money limit : thats all a game : load up candy crush and a couple of files and the laptop is home free if carrying it in
BUT
make sure that the electrics will be compatible - a HUGE issue with US stuff (I import regularly)

talkin that is illegal, but you will probably get away with it.

TalkinPeace Sun 23-Mar-14 20:09:56
