Rights regarding withholding report containing my personal info from GP

I don’t know whether anyone can help with this one?

I am a woman in my forties and recently received an ASD diagnosis from an NHS service. My GP was very dismissive about the referral, and basically grilled me about what difference it would make whether I was diagnosed or not. He was very patronising towards me but reluctantly agreed to refer because all my DC are also diagnosed and I felt I shared traits with them.

Anyway, after being diagnosed, I requested that the full report (in which will be detailed lots of personal info I divulged in the course of the assessment) was not sent to the GP, but that I was happy for them to send a letter stating the diagnosis. I was told that they did not foresee a problem with this, but would need to check with the management team. I was later contacted and informed that because the referral came from the GP, then they were required to send the full report.

I am very unhappy about this. It is not as if I will be needing any further ‘treatment’ or follow-up. Indeed, I’ve been discharged now I’ve been diagnosed. The GP seeing this report will not have any positive bearing on my wellbeing. Infact, if he does read it, I can envisage him being even more patronising towards me.

I have spoken to NHS England and the ICO about this, but each of those organisations could not give me an answer as to what my rights are as regards to withholding this report and referred me to each other! I can’t find any info on the net either.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

I don’t think you can tbh. Your medical notes are held by your gp and the full report needs to go in your file.

What exactly do you imagine your gp is going to do with your report that they shouldn’t?

Can you not just move surgery? Or go to another GP? I wouldn't go back to someone who treats me with such a lack of respect

No idea on the legal angle but if you can move GP then I works anyway as they don’t sound very supportive. It’s not always possible I know but worth a go.

Oh I see, be more patronising...

You don’t have to put up with that shit.

Call them out politely

‘Dr I’m sure you don’t intend to come across in such a patronising but I would appreciate if you could be conscious of how you speak to me.’

My dd has a health condition and working out how to communicate with medical professionals has been a steep learning curve.

I’m completely not certain about this but... as I’m also trying to get information from the NHS at the moment I have just (literally today) sent an email request to the Ombudsman with a Freedom of Information request. I’m hoping that works.
Perhaps try that..?

Thanks all for your input. My GP has zero understanding of ASD, so maybe the answer is to change surgeries. He has made other disparaging remarks to me before when I’ve raised things - I get the feeling he things I am a “neurotic woman” and I think reading this report may feed this belief.
Thanks for the link Krazynights34

But it is a medical diagnosis that the GP requested an assessment for - they need the feedback and result. I'm not sure why being angry at one doctor means that the result shouldn't be on your GP record? If you are unhappy with that dr I would feed that back to the surgery, but your medical records need to be complete and accurate...

If he is the doctor that asked for the assessment, then that is who it goes back to.
