Giving Notice on Rented House

I live in a rented house and currently in the process of buying (a different house). I'm pushing to exchange contracts on our next rent payment date so we can give notice to our landlords however this is looking unlikely but should only be a few days later (fingers crossed).

I really don't want to wait until the next rent payment date to serve notice, effectively having the house for the next 2 months. We wont wait for this to complete and would cost is a fortune.

So can anyone tell me if I can serve notice 5 days after I pay the next rent (in writing) saying that I will pay until the corresponding date the following month i.e.
Instead of serving on the 25.07 and paying until 25.08, I served on the 30.07, hand the keys back on the 30.08 and pay an extra 5 days rent?

unless something different in your contract, the legal position is that you (as the tenant) serve one months notice to expire on the day you normally pay the rent.

you can negotiate differently with your landlord but he doesn't have to accept. But if I understand this correctly, he still gets a month so it seems reasonable.

open discussions with him and get everything in writing.

Thank you, I thought that would be the case. Hopefully they'll be reasonable and agree to my negotiation, as they won't be out of pocket.

the more notice the better for that - even if you can't give it in writing, keep them posted about your plans.

communication is always best.

good luck!
