Anyone with two dishwashers?

I’ve read now and then on Larger Families of people who have two dishwashers (and washing machines, actually). I always wondered how you know you’d need two dishwashers, but it finally dawned on me I’ve known for years! At night when I set the dishwasher, there is a sink full of dishes still left til the next morning. I do around three loads a day, but never entirely clear the sink. We are getting our kitchen done and am contemplating an additional slimline, which would be useful for half loads.

Anyone have a set-up like this? Did an additional dishwasher help? We have 4 dc 7-13 and they like to cook!

My sister has two. Not a particularly large family (5 in total) but she loves to cook and entertains a lot. It was suggested to her when she had a new kitchen - it's great! Day to day she says she uses one like a cupboard (ie takes clean things out as she wants to use them) and the other for the dirty things and then she empties the clean one when the dirty one is full and starts again.
She has two full size, having had a slimline one myself I wouldn't bother if you have large pans as they don't fit (or one pan takes up a whole shelf).
The only issue (to me) might be retro fitting to a fitted kitchen and the loss of a cupboard.

We have a full size and a slimline. The full-size we use every day during the week, load during the day FYI lol and on overnight, the slimline goes on whenever we are all at home or have guests. I like it-it works really well for our open plan layout and we don’t have a stack of plates etc on the side. We had the luxury of space though and it wasn’t a choice between dishwasher or cupboard.

Yes, I sacrificed a cupboard for a second dishwasher with the understanding that I won't really have as many plates etc in the cupboard as they will be in the dishwasher, now use like the pp above, always have one dirty and one washing/clean.
Also have washing machine in the utility room which is for clean dirty clothes (bear with me) and one in the garage which is for my husband's filthy stinking workwear and filthy shoes etc. I also have two ovens so I can cook yorkshire puds on their own when I'm doing roast. And I only live in an average sized house.

I am definitely planning on two dishwashers when we extend and do a big kitchen/diner in a few years. Also two full sized ovens. Hadn't considered two washing machines yet though!

I've 2. One in the kitchen and one in the utility for overflow. I've been baking so they are both on the go right now. The one in the kitchen is integrated and the utility one is free standing (brought it from previous house).

I've two washing machines (long story) which works really well. I also have two ovens. When this kitchen was being designed I was going to have a big range then thought I'd be better off with two ovens and they work really well for me with all the baking I do.

I’ve met my people!

I do have two ovens but side by side and the small one is a little small. I’m pretty efficient with washing clothes and don’t need a second (completely get the dirty work clothes for a second!). We were just remodelling, but I’m sick of our hose never looking tidy, so will redo the kitchen. Anything else I’m missing that I could include?

My friend has a large family, and they have the "main" dishwasher in the kitchen, which they use every day. They have a second one in the garage, which gets used in the school holidays and some weekends. They also have a second washing machine there too, for use at weekends. Life changing!

If I had the room. I'd have 2 full-size dishwashers, 2 washing machines and 2 dryers. What bliss to get double the amount of stuff done at the same time x

I have 2 fridges (well one fridge freezer and 1 undercounter fridge) we use the fridge freezer day to day and turn the undercounter fridge on (which lives in the pantry) when we're having parties/BBQs/Christmas etc. At the moment it empty but on, waiting for the Christmas desserts to be delivered tonight!

Get more than 1 fridge if you can. I'm not bragging (you did ask) but I have an American Fridge/freezer in the utility and two wine coolers in the kitchen. 1 is used for Wine/booze the other for milk/pop/juice and water. Also handy for overflow from the big fridge.

The real game changer is a boiling water tap.

My house is just a normal 4 bed but with a very well thought out kitchen.

It is a dream of mine but never has the room...

It means you have a crockery cupboard that washes itself, very little to have to unload as you take stuff out of the clean one until the dirty one is full - bliss!!

One breaks down and you are not without one.

I don't get the washing machine thing so much as it's the drying that's the issue. 6 of us and it's usually been a load or two a day 🤷🏽‍♀️

If you've got the space the go for it. I would love to have 2 washing machines and 2 dryers, and we're only a little family.

it is the unstacking and restacking that is the killer. I just have dishes everywhere. I’m getting a big American fridge freezer. I’d love a quooker but I have a dd with ASD who self harms, so I suspect it would be a bad idea.

Interestingly, I saw an LG washer that has a draw underneath which is a very smaller washer. I don’t need an extra washer, but I could do that!

Well have 2 massively reduces the unloading and it means everyone can load/unload as they go...

I have always said I'd have two dishwashers if possible. I don't see any difference between storing clean dishes in the cupboard and in the dishwasher. And it's easier to pull out a dishwasher rack. So go for it.

I had a slimline dishwasher at one stage that took a surprising amount, don't dismiss one if you think it would work better space wise.

Family of five here. Having a new kitchen and extension. Will have two dishwashers - one slimline and one full size. One intergrated washing machine and one in the utility room and two ovens. I am in heaven! Can’t wait😍😍😍😍

In my last house I had 2 fridges, 2 freezers and 2 washing machines. Only one fridge was in the kitchen. Freezers in the cellar and washing machines in the conservatory. With adult children at home the fridge and freezer space was useful and one washing machine for me and one for kids to do their own washing in. It is so frustrating when you want to use the washing machine and someone else has their washing going.

I have 2 dishwashers which I use daily, by the time I have put in pots and pans as well as plates and glasses it adds up to one and a half dishwashers full, I also have 2 ovens and a full sized fridge and freezer. There are 3 of us every day but often 6 or more for various meals.

Another question!

For drying, I’m currently hanging the clothes next to the boiler - I think it might be the storage tank? (I’m Australian, heating is much different at home!). We are moving the boiler into the loft. Anyone have an ingenious method for drying here? I could hoist up a Shelia maid, but would prefer it not to be on display. I don’t want a dryer, space, £ and environmental reasons. I do use a Lakeland heated rail, but finding the current method easy. In summer, the Australian in me must hand it all out!

If you want 2 washing machines it might work well to get a large washing machine instead?

Report

As you are Australian, OP, I'll suggest this - if you have the space.

I'm in Oz too - love to hang clothes outside whenever possible. We're not a big family (only four of us), but this is our only clothesline.

I upgraded from those hopeless Bunnings drying racks - and got this one because you can hang full sheets on it.

We lift it between indoors and out, depending on the weather (Melbourne- so it does its own thing, ignoring the seasons 🙄)

I have 2 fridges, both under the counter ones. One in the kitchen for food and one in the garage (accessed via the kitchen) for alcohol, pop and extra food.
