Saving for children

I’ve been putting money into children’s savings accounts for my dcs since they were babies, whenever they were given cash at Christmas etc.
I’ve saved up quite a bit but it’s just occurred to me I don’t want them to get their hands on it when they reach 16 as it’s really a fund for them to use in further education, rather than spend on anything they want. Would it be possible for me to take it out before they get to that age and put it aside into an account in my own name?
