Unexpected low AMH.

Hi all,

Hope I’m posting in the right section. Happy to get my post moved if not.

I’m 33 years old and very aware of my biological clock, would really love a baby but things just aren’t quite right for that at the moment, mused and partner both phone down some debts and don’t yet live together. We’ve been together 18 months and he has said we can try for a baby once we’ve bought a house.

I’m an over thinker and have been catastrophising all possible scenarios and trying to plan for them. I’m also the highest earner, I earn double what he does so will need to make sure we can afford for me to take a decent amount of maternity leave as my employer doesn’t give any enhanced leave, just SMP.

We did agree back in December that I could stop taking my pill which was making my skin absolutely terrible and I’d had gradually declining mood since starting it at the end of 2018. We said we’d use the withdrawal “method” and deal with any mishaps with the MAP. I was having regular periods when I started the pill and these continued throughout taking it. For my pay 67 days on the pill I bled continually. This stopped within a couple of days of taking my last one. I have had a period since taking my last pill Dec 15th. Not currently pregnant, Have done a test.

So as part of my background planning/catastrophising I decided to do one of those online AMH tests where you prick your finger with a lancet and send of some dry blood spots to a lab. I just wanted to be reassured that I was within normal limits and that we had time and I didn’t have a fertility emergency on my hands or anything.

I got the results back this morning and it’s 6.0 pmol/L which the companies diagram says is very low for my age of 33.

Can anyone give any insight or personal anecdotes?

I don’t know if I should book in somewhere face to face to get it redone with the antral follicle scan too.

I did have reservations about the professionalism of the company Fertility Connected as the dry blood spot card was out of date and some of the grammar and things in their emails had been a bit off.

FWIW, I have been pregnant in the past, but I was too young and not in any position to be a mother to anyone so I had a termination, so I know I can get pregnant.

If anyone can offer any advice I’d be so grateful.

Thank you.

I wouldn’t make any decisions based off of internet tests.....

I would arrange to see a specialist and have some fertility tests done if you are worried. At least then you will be properly informed and it may help with the worrying!

Good luck!

Also, just because you could get pregnant when you were younger does not mean that is still the case now!

I think seeing a proper place will be my next steps now. Part of me wishes I’d not opened Pandora’s box and just let nature take its course until we were ready to try, but then I know there’s a reason I did this and it’s because I didn’t want to let options pass me by unwittingly.

Thanks.

Pay for proper testing. That way you will know the reality of your situation. If you want to be a mum don't take your fertility for granted. Good luck!

I wonder who is reputable to go with?

It’s so easy to get swept up in things on/from the internet - I know I was very guilty of it during our TTC journey!!

The hefa website will be able to show you registered clinics near you :)

Tough one. I did something similar to you OP- I also catastrophise- when I was 34 when we had just started trying.

I got a nasty shock- worse than you actually- my fsh was 12 so I did the amh test and it came back at 2.8. I was told to get on with Ivf ASAP but also that it probably wouldn’t work. It was a terrible shock.

However, I then got pregnant immediately but sadly it was a MC.

We then did the Ivf - and yes I responded really badly and only got 2 eggs. However- one of those eggs is now 5 years old.

When the Ivf baby was 8 months old my period came back so we started trying immediately- my expectation was that it would take years to conceive if it was possible at all.

I got a bfp 2 weeks later. I now have 2 boys with 16 months between them.

The point of this is- I’m not sure how helpful it was knowing about the low amh - I got pregnant naturally twice anyway and recent studies have shown that low amh doesn’t impact natural conception- it just means you have less time available to try.

It also doesn’t mean that Ivf won’t work- quality is much more important than loads of eggs.

Thank you that’s so reassuring to hear! I feel a bit better today having told my partner and slept on it. Think we’re going to book in for a fertility MOT and he’ll get the male tests too so we know exactly where we stand with whether we need to bring our concerted efforts at conceiving forward and dealing with the ideal world money things as we go along.

I don’t feel like I can face the rest of my life without having children, so we need to pull our socks up. It’s given me a wake up call to sort out my diet and exercise properly too.
