5mg folic acid for IVF or other reasons???

Today I saw a 2nd fertility specialist & will start IVF next month. She advised 5mg of folic acid, but in 8yrs TTC, this is the 1st time I've been told to do this! I've been on the 400mcg dose for years. Previously had 2 miscarriages, but one due to a genetic issue not related to neural tube disorders. I have no family history, no mal-absorption disorders, BMI 29 (overweight, but not obese). I'm 41.
Is the 5mg dose normal for IVF, or is it age, weight or something else?

I have a high BMI and this is my second pregnancy through ivf. Was told both times that I needed the higher dose due to my BMI, no other reason. I only started taking the 5mg when I had a positive pregnancy test otherwise I was taking a standard dose.

You can not come to any harm (nor a baby) from high folic acid levels. Better high than low. Also some evidence that it can help fertility. I’ve been on 5mg for the best part of 3 years. I have Crohn’s so my absorption may not be normal, but have been fairly well controlled in this time.
