Infertility

3 eggs fertilised

Hi all,

I’m on my first round of IVF for Male factor infertility and poor egg reserve (AMH approx 5 probably due to one ovary not working properly after surgery)

We had 4 mature eggs retrieved and only 3 fertilised so the best we can hope for now is a day 3 transfer (our doctor before the cycle had said they wanted a day 5 transfer). Feeling pretty down about our chances of having any eggs to transfer on day 3.

Does anyone have any success stories on how they improved the number of eggs collected on their second cycle?

@smith1986 thanks so much for your response. So pleased to hear your round was successful and gives me hope that we might get one to transfer. I don’t think my clinic want us to wait until day 5 in case we don’t end up with any.

Did you have other cycles and if so did you get better/worse number of fertilised eggs?

We used ICSI and the fertilisation rate was good, it was just that i couldn’t produce many eggs which has left me really disappointed and wondering how I could improve the numbers next time

@roseby sorry I read your question wrong 🤣
1st n 2nd cycle (short protocol) 1st cancelled poor response, 2nd 4 eggs 1fertilised.
3rd cycle different clinic and did long protocol also took ubiquinol. 17 eggs 12 mature 2 fertilised.
Much better response x

@carben @shazzz1xx thank you so much for your replies, it’s so nice to hear success stories!

@smith1986 wow that’s amazing how many more eggs you got on the 3rd cycle. I was short protocol this cycle so I will definitely ask about the long protocol next time

@Roseby if you do need to move onto a second cycle it is possible the improve the number of eggs collected, and their quality. My first cycle lay year failed after 8 follicles, 6 eggs, all 6 fertilised, 5 made it to day 5 but only two were good enough quality to use. Had both transferred - BFN.
Waited the months to next cycle and made some changes, 12 follicles, 12 eggs collected, 11 fertilised, 7 made it to day 5, two top qualify hatching blasts transferred and two good quality frosties. Resulting twins are now 6 months old Smile
The changes I made were :
Testosterone gel for 1 month prior to egg collection (prescribed by clinic)
Dropped BMI by 4 points through diet and regular exercise
Increased protein intake (I'm a vegetarian)
Ubiquinol 500mg per day
Zita West IVF preparation supplements
Vitamin d spray daily
Regular acupuncture with a fertility/IVF specialist
Daily fertility yoga
Reduced area levels by changing job and working hours
Daily maca powder at spirulina drinks
Raspberry leaf tea (for lining)
Clinic changed meds from just menopur to a menopur/bemfola combination
Daily meditation
Endometrial scratch

I can't say that any of these things alone made the difference but I'm certainly glad I put in all the hard work. I hope some of these ideas help you.

Good luck with this and any future cycles xxx

Sorry for the typos - silly auto correct! That should have said reduced stress level, not area level!

@CritterTamer thank you for the advice, that’s a long list but it has clearly had great results for you!! Congratulations on your twins! I have been doing some of those pre IVF but am now waiting to see if any of the 3 fertilised eggs have made it to day 3. I’m expecting to have poor quality eggs because I’ve had a poor response to stimulation and a low AMH. I’m 34 so didn’t expect my AMH to be as low as it was but I think I’ve just been unlucky and have prematurely ageing eggs!!

@roseby - low amh doesn't necessarily mean the eggs will be poor quality, just that you have less of them. At 34 there hopefully will be plenty of good ones! My cycles were done at age 40 although my amh was 10.4 - age is the most important factor with egg quality however, amh just determines how many eggs they are likely to get.

I hope your little embryos make it to transfer - good luck!

@CritterTamer thanks very much! Hopefully I’ll know a bit more tomorrow and keeping everything crossed that there are some good eggs amongst those three!!

We had male factor and I had low AMH. I produced 3 eggs ,2 fertilised, both made it to blast and one is now my 3 year old DS.

Personally I hated positive stories when I was going through this, I coped by seeing the worst option but know that it can happen. I was heartbroken when I produced so few eggs, never thought it would work but it did

Good luck

Thank you!

Had transfer today of 2 day 3 embryos. My clinic said that 2 had progressed and 1 hadn’t and they didn’t want to risk going to day 5 in case I ended up with none.

Both transferred were 10 cell but showed signs of fragmentation and uneven cell division so not the best quality.

This IVF is a rollercoaster! Disappointed not to have better day 3 embryos but having said that the clinic didn’t seem to think they were too bad, just that there were too few to wait until day 5.

Thanks again for all of your replies!

2 eggs; 1 embryo - transferred on day 3. I had low amh too and literally felt there was absolutely no chance of success....

He’s now almost 5. It can totally happen!

Good luck.
